Herta wint op Laguna Seca, Newgarden stelt tweede titel veilig

Het seizoen van de IndyCar Series zit erop. Colton Herta won zondagavond de laatste race van het seizoen op Laguna Seca, terwijl Josef Newgarden zich verzekerde van zijn tweede titel.

Makkelijk ging het niet voor Newgarden, die in 2017 de titel ook al wist te bemachtigen. Hij kwam als achtste over de finish, maar zijn concurrenten waren ook niet sterk genoeg om de mindere dag van de Amerikaan af te straffen. Simon Pagenaud leek tijdens de race de grootste bedreiging, omdat hij gedurende de slotfase van de race steeds dichterbij wist te komen aan Scott Dixon op de derde positie.

De Franse Penske-coureur kwam echter niet voorbij van de vijfvoudig kampioen, die in 2019 de titel ook aan zich voorbij moet laten gaan. Samen kwamen ze achter Herta en Will Power over de finish. Voor de 19-jarige Herta was het zijn tweede zege van het seizoen, nadat hij ook op het Circuit of the Americas de sterkste was. De vijfde positie was uiteindelijk voor Felix Rosenqvist, die daarmee de titel 'Rookie of the Year' binnenhaalde.

Alexander Rossi was het hele seizoen nadrukkelijk een kandidaat voor de titel, maar in Monterey kon hij geen vuist maken. De Andretti Autosport-coureur werd zesde en blijft dus nog zoeken naar zijn eerst titel. Sebastien Bourdais pakte ondanks een nekblessure de zevende plek, voor Newgarden, James Hinchcliffe en Ryan Hunter-Reay op P10. Marcus Ericsson eindigde de race op de elfde positie, voor Graham Rahal en Max Chilton.
