O'Ward en Askew belangrijkste kandidaten voor zitje bij McLaren SP

Arrow McLaren SP zal komend waarschijnlijk met twee jonge, talentvolle coureurs beginnen aan haar IndyCar-avontuur. Patricio O'Ward en Oliver Askew zijn de belangrijkste kandidaten voor de zitjes bij het debuterende team.

Voor het eerst sinds de jaren '70 zal McLaren volgend jaar terugkeren in de IndyCar Series. Dat doet het Britse merk niet met een volledig nieuw team, maar er wordt een samenwerking aangegaan met Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Daardoor zal het team volgend jaar door het leven gaan als Arrow McLaren SP en volgens RACER.com begint er steeds meer duidelijk te worden over welke coureurs het team gaat inzetten.

Populaire Hinchcliffe kind van de rekening

Lang leek James Hinchcliffe, al jarenlang coureur van SPM, een van de coureurs te worden in 2020, maar McLaren SP lijkt toch voor een andere koers te gaan. Zondagavond kreeg de populaire Canadees te horen dat het team in 2020 zijn diensten niet zal gaan gebruiken, waardoor hij waarschijnlijk buiten de boot dreigt te vallen voor een plekje in de IndyCar.

McLaren SP lijkt daarentegen in te willen zetten op jonge talenten en daarvoor heeft het haar oog laten vallen op de twee laatste Indy Lights-kampioenen: Patricio O'Ward en Oliver Askew. O'Ward is weer op de markt, nadat een avontuur bij Red Bull om een superlicentie te halen mislukte. Zak Brown van McLaren had in april al een ontmoeting met de Mexicaan over een eventuele samenwerking.

Askew werd afgelopen seizoen kampioen in de Indy Lights, waarin hij in een onderlinge strijd te sterk was voor Rinus van Kalmthout. Een jaar daarvoor werd de Amerikaan in de Pro Mazda nog verslagen door de Nederlander. Askew testte eerder dit jaar een IndyCar voor Chip Ganassi Racing, maar een kans op een zitje daar verdween doordat Marcus Ericsson als derde coureur werd aangesteld. Desondanks lijkt hij dus bij McLaren SP terecht te kunnen.
