Eerste testdag valt in het water, Van Kalmthout snelste in middagsessie

De eerste dag van de IndyCar Spring Training op het Circuit of the Americas is volledig in het water gevallen. Lage temperaturen en regenbuien zorgden ervoor dat er weinig gereden werd. Rinus van Kalmthout reed de snelste tijd van de dag.

Regen en lage temperaturen speelden de IndyCar Series parten tijdens de eerste testdag van het nieuwe seizoen. De temperatuur van het asfalt kwam niet boven de 9 graden Celsius uit en datzelfde gold voor de buitentemperatuur. Omdat de banden volgens leverancier Firestone hierdoor niet op bedrijfstemperatuur kunnen komen, werd de middagsessie vroegtijdig stilgelegd. Eerder gebeurde dat ook al met de ochtendsessie.

's Ochtends was regerend kampioen Josef Newgarden de snelste met een 2:42.6005, maar daarbij reed hij wel met 50 kilometer per uur door de pits. De overige coureurs kwamen in de ochtend niet verder dan een aantal installatieronden. 's Middags werd er wel weer met de groene vlag gezwaaid, maar de omstandigheden werden niet veel beter.

Slechts 10 coureurs op baan in middagsessie

Slechts 10 coureurs kwamen na de lunchpauze de baan nog op en van allen was Van Kalmthout de snelste. Hij reed een 2:41.816, waarmee hij dus bijna een seconde sneller was dan Newgarden in de ochtend was. Alexander Rossi gaf 6,1 seconden toe op de tijd van VeeKay, terwijl Supercars-kampioen Scott McLaughlin en Will Power, allebei in dienst van Penske, nog eens zes seconden langzamer waren.

De verwachting is dat er woensdag meer gereden kan worden door de 27 bij de test aanwezige IndyCar-coureurs. Het belooft droog te blijven op het Circuit of the Americas en ook de temperaturen lopen verder op dan op dinsdag het geval was. De maximumtemperatuur ligt op zo'n 17 graden Celsius, wat dus een meer representatieve situatie moet opleveren. Doordat er weinig gereden werd op de eerste dag, hoeven de teams zich geen zorgen te maken over het bandengebruik.
