Rinus van Kalmthout schrijft geschiedenis en is Rookie Of The Year

Na de kwalificatie van gisteren in St. Petersburg kon Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout zich officieel kronen als Rookie Of The Year. Zijn directe concurrent Alex Palou kon theoretisch nog het debutantenkampioenschap winnen, maar had alle maximale punten daarvoor nodig. Door het mislopen van de poleposition en bijbehorende punt, ging de titel direct naar VeeKay. De race is vanavond rond 19.30 Nederlandse tijd en de kersverse rookie-kampioen start als negende.

Hoewel de rookie-titel vooraf zo goed als binnen was, wilde de geboren Hoofddorper niet te vroeg juichen. Nu het uiteindelijk is volbracht, is zijn debuutjaar voor hem geslaagd. "Alle wensen van het lijstje voor seizoen 2020 zijn nu afgestreept", liet de coureur van Ed Carpenter Racing weten na afloop van de kwalificatie. "Ik heb al mijn doelen bereikt ik wilde een podiumplaats scoren en het debutantenkampioenschap winnen, en bovendien een goede indruk achterlaten. Dat is gelukt en daar ben ik trots op."

De IndyCar-coureur blikte tevens terug op zijn resultaat van de zaterdag op het stratencircuit in Florida. De 20-jarige rijder werd negende. "Uiteindelijk ben ik tevreden met het optreden in het tweede gedeelte van de kwalificatie en mijn startplaats, maar als ik mijn rondje uit het eerste segment had weten te herhalen, had ik me bij de beste zes kunnen scharen."

Gisteren waren er problemen met de tijdwaarneming en werden tijden geschrapt door incidenten. Ook VeeKay leek in eerste instantie de pineut te zijn en mocht uitstappen. Volgens de stewards reed de Nederlander te hard onder geel. Zijn team vond dat zijn pupil niks fout gehad gedaan en na wat verhitte discussies met de wedstrijdleiding mocht de coureur alsnog meedoen aan de Fast Twelve, het tweede deel van de kwalificatie.

Volgens VeeKay was de ronde in zijn eerste run eentje om in te lijsten. "Het was een van mijn allerbeste uit mijn gehele autosportloopbaan en dat biedt perspectief voor morgen. Ik mik op de top vijf in de laatste wedstrijd van dit onvergetelijke seizoen.''

Rectificatie: gisteren berichtten we dat VeeKay tiende was geëindigd in de kwalificatie. We kregen achteraf gezien niet de juiste informatie door.

Veekay heeft een fantastisch debut jaar achter de rug, en als hij die lijn volgend seizoen weet door te trekken dan is de kans megagroot dat hij in 2022 voor een topteam zal rijden.
