IndyCar verplaatst race in St Petersburg naar 25 april

De IndyCar-organisatie heeft een eerste wijziging aan de kalender voor 2021 moeten doorvoeren. De voor 7 maart gepland staande openingsrace in St Petersburg is verplaatst naar 25 april. Dit betekent dat de aftrap van de nieuwe jaargang op 11 april op Barber Motorsports Park plaatsvindt.

Met dit uitstel hoopt de IndyCar dat het op de nieuwe datum wel mogelijk is om publiek toe te laten bij de race op St Petersburg, aangezien het coronavirus nu nog volop rondwaart in Florida. Penske-directeur Mark Miles: "Het wekt geen verbazing dat een evenement van deze omvang, dat gepland stond voor de eerste week van maart, nog hinder ondervindt van de coronapandemie."

"We zijn dan ook verguld dat we in overleg met de burgemeester en de promotor een meer geschikte nieuwe datum hebben weten te prikken voor de race in St Petersburg. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de start van het nieuwe IndyCar-seizoen niet in het geding komt."
