Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout heeft het IndyCar-seizoen afgetrapt met een achttiende tijd in de eerste vrije training op Barber Motorsport Park. De Nederlander reed op de road course een 1.23.003 en was daarmee ruim acht tienden langzamer dan de nummer één Alex Palou. VeeKay reed in deze sessie een totaal van 17 ronden.

Een paar uur later mocht VeeKay de motoren al weer starten voor de tweede vrije training. Daarin werd de Ed-Carpenter Racing-coureur negentiende met 1.23.399. Daarmee was de Nederlander vier tienden langzamer dan zijn tijd eerder op de dag. In totaal werkte VeeKay viertien rondjes af in de tweede en laatste training voor de kwalificatie.

Deze laatste oefensessie was meteen een eerste krachtmeting. De traningstijden bepalen of je in de eerste of tweede kwalificatiegroep terecht komt. De beste zes van elke groep mag door naar het volgende segment. Deze twaalf rijdens strijden voor een plekje in de Fast Six, een zogeheten superpole. In de Fast Six wordt uiteindelijk bepaalt wie poleposition pakt. De kwalificatie is om 23.55 Nederlandse tijd.
