Opvallend: vrouwelijk team neemt deel aan 105ste Indy 500

Op de grid van de 105ste Indy 500 is Paretta Autosport een opvallende verschijning. Het team bestaat grotendeels uit vrouwelijke teamleden. Dit project is dankzij het ‘Race for Equality & Change’ programma van de IndyCar tot stand gekomen en streeft naar meer diversiteit in de sport.

Het team hoefde niet het wiel opnieuw uit te vinden en krijgt ondersteuning van Team Penske. De beroemde renstal heeft geholpen met het opbouwen van de bolide en leent - voornamelijk vrouwelijk - personeel uit aan Paretta Autosport voor de legendarische race over de Brickyard.

De deelname van Paretta Autosport was allesbehalve een zekerheidje. Simona de Silvestro in de #16-machine had zelfs een herkansing nodig om zich te plaatsen voor de wedstrijd. In de zogeheten 'Last Chance' pakte zij de allerlaatste startplek. In totaal doen er 33 wagens mee, waaronder Rinus VeeKay die op de eerste rij mag beginnen als derde. De race is zondag 30 mei.

Goed initiatief, het zou mooi zijn als een voornamelijk door vrouwen gerund team zich tussen de andere teams mengt. Diversiteit is prima overigens, moet geen doel an sich zijn.
