Newgarden snelt zich naar derde pole op Road America, Magnussen 21ste

In de REV Group Grand Prix op het circuit van Road America stuurt Josef Newgarden zichzelf naar poleposition. Het is zijn 13de pole uit zijn carrière, de tweede op rij en de derde op deze baan.

Jack Harvey, de snelste in Fast 12, oud-kampioenen, Simon Pagenaud, Will Power en Josef Newgarden, en de jonge garde met Alex Palou en Colton Herta plaatsen zich voor de Fast Six, waarin wordt bepaald wie op pole mag starten.

In het laatste segment durft Newgarden voor de hardere band te kiezen, terwijl de rest op gebruikte softs rijden. Deze strategie pakt voor de tweevoudig kampioen uit 2017 en 2019 goed uit. Herta wordt tweede en start naast Newgarden op de voorste startrij.

Leider in de tussenstand Patricio O'Ward is te vinden op P10, terwijl de nummer 2 in de stand, Alex Palou, als vijfde begint. Tussen de twee jonge rijders zit maar één punt verschil. Regerend kampioen Scott Dixon vangt de wedstrijd aan als 13de. De Nieuw-Zeelander staat derde in het kampioenschap.

De vervanger van Rinus VeeKay, Oliver Askew, kwam in de Ed Carpenter- bolide niet verder dan P16, maar staat wel naast zijn tijdelijke teamgenoot Conor Daly.

Oud F1-coureur Kevin Magnussen, die voor het eerst meedoet in de IndyCar, start vanaf de 21ste stek. Zijn voormalig teamgenoot bij Haas F1, Romain Grosjean staat ver voor hem op P7.

De 25 deelnemers beginnen zondagavond Nederlandse tijd om 18.40 uur aan de wedstrijd.
