Ovalracen eenvoudig? Volgens Grosjean ziet iedereen 'het volledig verkeerd'

Racen op een oval is een totaal andere discipline dan rijden op een straten -en permanent circuit. Dat heeft Romain Grosjean ondervonden na zijn eerste meters op de kombaan van Gateway. De voormalig F1-coureur kwam daar dinsdag in actie tijdens een test. Rinus VeeKay was op de speedway ook van de partij.

Grosjean, uitkomend voor Dale Coyne Racing, zei het volgende over zijn ovaldebuut: ''Het was mijn eerste keer op een oval en het is totaal anders in vergelijking met wat ik eerder heb gedaan. Er is natuurlijk veel te leren op ovals, van het gevoel in de bolide tot hoe je snel kunt gaan en wat je nodig hebt in de wagen. Ik moet zeggen dat iedereen die zegt dat het rijden op een oval eenvoudig is, het volledig verkeerd heeft! Het was zelfs speciaal en erg moeilijk, maar ik heb er ook veel plezier aan beleefd!”

De Fransman kende een goede testdag ondanks een spin. Hij reed in totaal 166 ronden en heeft hierdoor veel kennis opgedaan. “We hebben gedurende de dag veel informatie verzameld. We hebben goed gewerkt en hebben geleerd dat we nog meer snelheid uit de wagen kunnen halen. Uiteindelijk voelde de wagen goed aan tijdens de laatste lange run. Het belangrijkste voor vandaag was om goede data te verzamelen, dat ik mij prettig in de wagen voel en dat ik tijdens een lange run aan kan vallen. Nu moeten we alles aan elkaar breien wanneer ik hier over een paar weken zijn voor mijn eerste ovalrace. Ik kijk er erg naar uit!''

Grosjean reed tot nu toe alleen op straten en permanente circuits en vond ovals te gevaarlijk, maar besloot begin juni het toch te gaan proberen. De keuze voor Gateway is volgens de IndyCar-coureur om vertrouwen te kweken en het rijden op een oval eigen te maken. Het raceweekend op Gateway begint op zaterdag 21 augustus. De race is op zondag 22 augustus.

Het verschil tussen een "normaal circuit" en een oval is als appels met peren vergelijken. Het verschil tussen ovals onderling is overigens net zo groot. Indianapolis een 2.5 mile superspeedeway, is een relatief "simpele"oval configuratie, lage banking van vergelijkbare hoeken, grote rechte stukken. Gatway, is een korte "ei-vormige" oval, met banking met banking met verschillende hoeken. Prima leerbaantje dus voor hem!

  Goede post en grotendeels mee eens. Maar Indy een "simpele" Oval noemen en zeggen dat de bochten vrijwel gelijk zijn, doet echt tekort aan de enorme uitdaging die Indy is. Maar ik denk dat je dit ook wel weet.

Het enige dat echt eenvoudig is is dat je niet hoeft te onthouden welke kant de bocht op gaat en hoe scherp die bocht is, want dat is altijd hetzelfde

  Per oval wel ja, maar je hebt altijd maar 3 of 4 bochten die allemaal linksaf gaan en meestal ook allemaal even scherp zijn

  Ik zou zeggen kijk de Indy kalender er even op na en je ziet dat het dit jaar, met de ovals die ze aandoen, niet zo is.
