O'Ward wint spannend gevecht om pole in Indianapolis, VeeKay P9

Tijdens een zeer spannende kwalificatie in de Big Machine Spikes Coolers Grand Prix op de binnenbaan van Indianapolis Motor Speedway heeft Patricio O'Ward voor de vierde maal in zijn IndyCar-carriére de pole op zijn naam geschreven. Met een tijd van 1.10.715 was de Arrow McLaren SP-coureur nipt sneller dan Will Power, Romain Grosjean, Christian Lundgaard en Colton Herta. Alle vijf coureurs zaten binnen 0.048 duizendsten van elkaar.

De kwalificatie was anders dan normaal. Op de road course van de Brickyard werd dit keer twee segmenten afgewerkt in plaats van drie. In Q1 konden alle coureurs zich plaatsen voor de Fast Twelve. In de Fast Twelve werd er direct gestreden om poleposition.

De vierde plaats van Lundgaard springt uit het oog. De Deen komt uit in de Formule 2 en maakt dit weekend zijn IndyCar-debuut voor Rahal Letterman Lanigan. VeeKay haalde op de valreep een plekje bij de beste twaalf en kwam niet verder dan een negende plaats. De volledige uitslag is hier te vinden.

Zaterdagavond 18.30 uur Nederlandse tijd is de Grand Prix. Het is de tweede keer dit jaar dat er op de binnenbaan (infield) van Indianapolis Motor Speedway wordt gereden. Bij de voorgaande editie schreef VeeKay geschiedenis door als derde Nederlander een IndyCar-wedstrijd te winnen na Arie Luyendyk en Robert Doornbos.

  Een reuze prestatie (of een toevalstreffer?), maar het niveau van de Indycar zal nu ook wel weer worden betwist.
  Misschien is het een combinatie?

  Larry Perkins@ het is indrukwekkend van lundgaard op de meest europese baan van het seizoen.
  
  Indy is geen F1 uiteraard, maar ik persoonlijk zie het op een niveau tussen F2 en F1. Goede F2 rijders zouden zich kunnen redden maar over de breedte vind ik F2 toch wel slechter.
  
  Als lundgaard een podium pakt dan is Indy misschien wel net zo'n niveau als F2....

  Vorige week was Marcus ook flink aan t sandbaggen. Matige quali... expres de voorvleugel beschadigen en vervolgens onder de radar de wedstrijd naar zijn hand tillen ;) gaat gewoon podium halen!
