Veekay snakt naar goed resultaat: "Ik hoop dat de gifbeker nu leeg is"

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout kent tot dusver een tegenvallende tweede seizoenshelft. In de straten van Nashville werd de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur slachtoffer van een opstopping bij de herstart, op de binnenbaan van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway - waar hij eerder dit jaar nog zegevierde - was een toptienklassering nooit in beeld vanwege onverklaarbare problemen met de balans en tot overmaat van ramp zorgde VeeKay zaterdag op de oval van Gateway ervoor dat hij niet alleen zichzelf elimineerde, maar ook titelkandidaten Alex Palou en Scott Dixon.

Over dat laatste zei de 20-jarige Hoofddorper het volgende: “Ik sorteerde voor op de binnenbaan van de eerste bocht. Voor mij ging een andere rijder plots van zijn gas, omdat er rijders vóór hem van het gas gingen. Op zo’n moment kan je vrij weinig doen om een touché te voorkomen. Het middenveld is gevaarlijk bij herstarts en vanuit mijn positie – de elfde plek op dat moment – was ik een passagier. Palou werd eveneens slachtoffer van dit hele gebeuren.”

Na een ijzersterke start van seizoen zit het dus VeeKay de laatste tijd niet mee. “Na mijn sleutelbeenblessure heb ik veel tegenslag gehad. Ik hoop dat de gifbeker nu leeg is. De komende circuits liggen me en dus richt ik mijn vizier op de wedstrijden aldaar. Op zowel Portland als Laguna Seca heb ik in de Road To Indy races gewonnen. Ik ga de komende drie weken keihard trainen, om optimaal voorbereid aan de start van de laatste drie races te verschijnen”, besluit VeeKay strijdvaardig.

Het seizoen telt nog drie races in september. 12 september staat de Grand Prix van Portland op het programma. Een week later reist het IndyCar-circus af naar het legendarische circuit van Laguna Seca. De slotrace is op 26 september in de straten van Long Beach, hoewel dat evenement onzeker is vanwege het coronavirus.

Het lijkt er voor mij op, alsof Rinus na de Indy 500 een knauw heeft gehad. Dat is de laatste race waarin hij echt excelleerde. En tot dat moment, had hij ook echt het momentum. Nu lijkt het, alsof hij geknakt is. Hij probeert teveel en er komt te weinig uit. En met de mindere resultaten komt ook het chagrijn naar boven en het commentaar.

Ik hoop dat ze bij ECR een goede coach voor Rinus hebben en dat Ed zelf ook Rinus niks kwalijk neemt. Vertrouwen in elkaar heeft ze al een overwinning gebracht en een reëele kans op de Indy 500. Nu is het even minder maar het momentum komt wel weer. Ik ben namelijk overtuigd dat het geen geluk was hoe goed Rinus het jaar startte. Een top 10 finish in het kampioenschap moet het doel nu zijn. En dat kan makkelijk gehaald worden.

  ben het met je eens, jammer maar ook een beetje begrijpelijk de torenhoge verwachtingen van velen en zeker na zijn overwinning zal een hoge druk bij hem gelegd hebben! al moet ik zeggen dat ECR ook de hand in eigen boezem mag steken , te vaak zitten ze compleet verkeerd met de afstelling en zeker bij de quali's. over het algemeen is Rinus wel de rust zelve maar nu heeft ie het even op zijn heupen, al ben ik net als jij ervan overtuigd dat hij wel weer komt bovendrijven.
  
  Palou en Dixon zullen minder vergevingsgezind zijn al weten die ook dat dit racen is en dergelijke dingen kunnen voorkomen

Ik heb de beelden gezien en volgens mij was hij toch echt de veroorzaken van die crash en waren Dixon en Palou de slachtoffers

De beste races van Veekay zijn behaald met een mega undercut. Uit verkeer. Uit chaos. Hij moet een race rijden zonder in de chaos te zitten dan komt het resultaat vanzelf wel weer. Een resultaat forceren maakt een DNF zoals dit weekend.
