Herta pakt in vermakelijke race winst op Laguna Seca

Colton Herta heeft vanaf poleposition voor de tweede maal op rij de Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey gewonnen. Kampioenschapsleider Alex Palou deed goede zaken voor de tussenstand door als tweede te eindigen. Zijn naaste belager om de titel, Pato O'Ward, werd vijfde.

De rijder van de dag was Romain Grosjean. De Fransman liet zien dat inhalen absoluut geen probleem is op het smalle en korte circuit in Californië. Vanaf P13 haalde de voormalig F1-coureur de een na de ander in en finishte zeer knap op P3 en pakte zijn derde podium van het seizoen.

De mooiste actie van hem was op Scott Dixon voor het ingaan bij Corkscrew. Het had veel gelijkenissen van The Pass met Alessandro Zanardi en Bryan Herta, de (vader van Colton Herta,) maar Grosjean hield zijn felpaarse Dale Coyne Racing-bolide wel binnen de lijntjes.

Over het algemeen was er veel actie op de 3.6 kilometerlange baan. Dat kwam mede door grote verschillen tussen de harde en zachte band en de snelle degradatie van het rubber. Met name de hardere band had het zwaar om grip te vinden.

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout startte door problemen in de kwalificatie vanaf P24, maar kon in de race van zondag niet veel goed maken. Op de hardere band had de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur veel last van onderstuur. Op de soft band ging het iets beter, maar niet genoeg om dichtbij de top tien te komen. De Hoofddorper eindigde op de achttiende plaats.

Stand

Het spannende kampioenschap komt aankomend weekend tot een einde in de straten van Long Beach. In totaal zijn er nog 54 punten te verdelen.

De onderstaande coureurs doen nog mee om de titel:

1. Alex Palou - 517
2. Pato O'Ward - 482
3. Josef Newgarden - 469

Dat betekent dat Scott Dixon wordt onttroond als kampioen.

Tja, toch jammer dat het seizoen van Veekay een beetje uitgaat als een nachtkaars. Pech en fouten (foutjes), misschien toch een gebrek aan ervaring. Hopelijk staat hij er volgend seizoen weer gewoon goed bij!

  Eerste pitstop was bagger. 2de pitstop was oke en vooral de 3de was goed (immers beter dan Daily die werd gepasseerd in de pitstraat). Echt heel suf om dan vrijwillig nogmaals naar binnen te gaan. Had P12 moeten zijn denk ik.

Mooie race, vooral voor Laguna Seca dat voor de TV kijker niet altijd te pruimen is door de smalle baan.

Als dit door mechanische grip komt en oud asfalt... dan zeg ik kom maar door met de nieuwe F1 regels.

Gisteravond erg genoten van Grosjean, hoe die telkens iedereen voorbij banjerde. :)
Die man kan best een potje sturen. Zou Formule 1 niet iets voor hem zijn? :P

  Zou best kunnen @Eddy hoewel de stap vanuit de IndyCar naar de F1 best wel groot blijkt te zijn, maar laat Grosjean eerst zijn 8e kookboek maar eens afronden, want dat is door zijn Indy-avontuurtjes totaal naar de achtergrond verdwenen...

  Ja, inderdaad. Toen vorig jaar bekend werd dat hij dit jaar niet meer F1 zou rijden had ik goede hoop dat nu eindelijk dat nieuwe kookboek uit zou komen, maar helaas.
  Inmiddels schijnt wel al de titel van het boek te zijn uitgelekt: "Ik bak er niks van".
