Miscommunicatie nekt goed resultaat voor VeeKay: "Klein detail, grote gevolgen"

Het zit Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout in de tweede seizoenshelft niet mee. Tijdens de Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey op Laguna Seca was de 21-jarige coureur uit Hoofddorp bezig met een sterke opmars vanuit het achterveld totdat miscommunicatie met zijn team een goede eindklassering in het putje gooide.

“Klein detail, grote gevolgen”, liet VeeKay vanuit de Verenigde Staten optekenen. “Ik ben de pitstraat ingereden zonder dat het team daarvan op de hoogte was. Over de boardradio hoorde ik een bepaalde, vertrouwelijke tekst waarop ik dacht dat het mijn beurt was om naar binnen te komen. Dat bleek niet zo te zijn. Ik had dit kunnen checken”, klinkt de Nederlander bewust van zijn aandeel.

Het weekend begon veelbelovend met een tiende tijd in de vrije training, maar na de kwalificatie liep VeeKay achter de feiten aan.

"We wisten van tevoren dat Laguna Seca geen gemakkelijk weekend zou worden voor ons. In de kwalificatie op zaterdag zat het tot overmaat van ramp flink tegen, met een haperend gaspedaal. Vanaf startplaats vierentwintig is het altijd lastig, maar we gingen er vol voor. Na een korte eerste stint hebben we besloten om voor een vierstopper te gaan. Die werkte, want na drie stops streed ik mee voor plaats elf", zei de Nederlander.

"Helaas volgde de pitstop die geen pitstop bleek”, verzucht VeeKay. "Het is lastig om zoveel tegenslag te verwerken, maar ik ben ervan overtuigd dat Ed Carpenter Racing en ik tijdens de seizoensfinale van volgend weekend voor een mooi slot kunnen zorgen. We gaan er nog één keer voor de volle honderd procent voor, om dit seizoen in ieder geval met een mooi resultaat te beëindigden", besluit VeeKay strijdvaardig.

Met nog één wedstrijd voor de boeg bezet VeeKay de elfde positie met een totaal van 303 punten. Nummer tien Alexander Rossi heeft slechts één punt meer. Een toptienklassering is voor VeeKay nog steeds mogelijk.

De laatste race van het IndyCar-seizoen 2021 is in de straten van Long Beach en wordt aanstaande zondag verreden.

Veekay heeft dit seizoen mooie resultaten weten te halen, en zijn 1e IndyCar Overwinning gehaald voor een klein team! De laatste overwinning voor ECR was in 2016 dus kunnen we best trots zijn op hem ! Volgend jaar weer lekker met eem frisse blik er tegenaan em veel oefenen op de pitstops bij ECR, want die kosten hem steeds posities op de baan.

  Helaas lijkt het seizoen een beetje als een nachtkaars uit te gaan. In het begin van het seizoen liet Rinus echt bijzondere dingen zien, met als hoogtepunt die overwinning. Maar de laatste races weten ze de eindjes niet aan elkaar te knopen. Foutjes van Rinus, slechte pitstops, geen pace en wat ongeluk hebben hem behoorlijk doen tuimelen in de stand om het WK.
  
  Volgend seizoen moeten Rinus en ECR echt een tandje bijzetten voor de volgende stap.

  ECR kan het beste de ontslagen pitcrew van Ferrari door de jaren heen optrommelen.
  
  Ik snap dat door tanken, er minder haast is met de banden, maar ik sta soms met Indycar (en dan met name de kleine teams als ECR) verbaasd te kijken hoe langzaam de crew met hun bierbuiken beweegt...
  
  Ik denk echt dat Ganassi/Penske/Andretti hier zon 6 tot 10 seconden per race mee pakken. Dat is echt veel.
