Officieel: Rinus VeeKay blijft in 2022 bij Ed Carpenter Racing

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout rijdt in 2022 ook voor Ed Carpenter Racing in de IndyCar. Dit nieuws hing al een tijdje in de lucht, maar de deal was nog niet officieel bevestigd. De Hoofddorper verlengde het contract bij zijn werkgever met één jaar.

Samenwerking werpt vruchten af

De 21-jarige Nederlander debuteerde in 2020 voor het team en boekte gelijk succes met de titel Rookie Of The Year, een poleposition en een derde plaats op de binnenbaan van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Op dezelfde baan, deed VeeKay dit seizoen er een extra schepje bovenop met zijn allereerste zege (voor het team de eerste sinds 2016). Daarnaast pakte de Nederlander een tweede plaats in Detroit.

ECR

Ed Carpenter Racing, een relatief kleine renstal, doet vanaf 2012 mee aan de Amerikaanse tegenhanger van de Formule 1. Het team werd opgericht door Derrick Walker, Tim Broyler, Bret Schmitt en Ed Carpenter. In 2015 fuseerden ECR en Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing en werd CFH Racing. Een jaar later, in 2016, is Ed Carpenter Racing weer actief als zelfstandig raceteam.

Ik denk dat dit het laatste jaar in de luwte wordt voor Veekay. Daarna naar een echt competitief team. Hopelijk heeft hij komend jaar in ieder geval een wat stabieler seizoen.
