Newgarden troeft in allerlaatste meters McLaughlin af om winst

In de allerlaatste bocht op de Texas Motor Speedway besliste Josef Newgarden de strijd om de zege en liet de winnaar van drie weken terug, Scott McLaughlin, verbijsterend in zijn cockpit achter. Derde werd voormalig F1-coureur Marcus Ericsson en Nederlands trots Rinus VeeKay scoorde een negende positie.

De kombaan in Texas staat bekend als één van de huiveringswekkendste oval-circuits op de kalender door de steile banking, hoge snelheden en de lay-out in de vorm van de hoofdletter D. Neutralisaties konden dan ook niet uitblijven, maar in de zinderende slotfase bleef dat bespaard.

In de laatste 40 ronden ging Penske-coureur McLaughlin aan de leiding met teamgenoot Newgarden op zijn staart. Met nog een ronde te gaan, leek het erop dat McLaughlin met de winst vandoor ging. Totdat hij last kreeg van verkeer.

De Nieuw-Zeelander nam geen risico om te passeren, verloor wat momentum en Newgarden zag een buitenkans voor een ultieme en laatste aanval. De Amerikaan haalde zijn opponent in en kaapte vlak voir de finishlijn de zege voor McLaughlins neus weg.

De Nieuw-Zeelander blijft ondanks de tweede plek ruim aan de leiding in de tussenstand. De volgende wedstrijd in de IndyCar is op het fameuze Long Beach in het weekend van 8-10 april.

Nu waren de pitstops bij Veekay goed, alleen zat het weer niet goed met de strategie, kostte hem uiteindelijk een top 3 plaats. Op naar de volgende race in Long Beach.
