Preview: vierstrijd in Road America om leiding in kampioenschap

Dit weekend sluit IndyCar de bomvolle autosportzondag af met de Sonsio Grand Prix op Road America. Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout hoopt na de nulscore bij de Indianapolis 500 en de Detroit Grand Prix zich te revancheren op zijn favoriete circuit van de kalender.

In de stand is de kampioen van 2014, Will Power, na zijn redemption in Detroit, de nieuwe leider in de tussenstand met 255 punten. Recent Indy500-winnaar Marcus Ericsson staat drie punten achter de Australiër. Pato O'Ward (243) en regerend kampioen Alex Palou (241) volgen op de voet en is er een heuse vierstrijd om het kampioenschap ontstaan. VeeKay is afgezakt na de dertiende plaats door zijn laatste DNF in Belle Isle.

Old Skool

Road America is met zijn 6.5 kilometerlange circuit het Spa-Francorchamps van Noord-Amerika. Beide banen hebben raakvlakken door de lengte van de baan, de lange rechte stukken, snelle en langzame doordraaiers, veel hoogteverschillen en veel gras en grind naast het asfalt.

In 2021 won Palou de 32ste wedstrijd op Road America. In 1982 werd de eerste race verreden en werd gewonnen door de Mexicaan Héctor Rebaque. Jacques Villeneuve Sr, het broertje van de overleden F1-coureur Gilles Villeneuve en de oom van wereldkampioen F1 Jacques Villeneuve, won in 1985 zijn enige overwinning. Jacques Villeneuve zelf triomfeerde in 1994 en 1995. Ook andere bekende coureurs, zoals Alex Zanardi, Paul Tracey, Sebastien Bourdais en Christiano da Matta hebben deze race op hun palmares staan. De statistiek met meeste zeges, in totaal drie stuks, delen de legendarische namen van Mario Andretti en Emerson Fittipaldi met elkaar.

Van 2008 tot en met 2015 werd er niet geracet op Road America.

Hopen dat Rinus het goed gaat doen.

Road America lijkt me ook voor F1 een mooie baan. Daar zie ik ze liever dan Miami of Vegas.
