McLaughlin gelooft nog steeds in kampioenschap

McLaughlin gelooft nog steeds dat hij het IndyCar-kampioenschap kan winnen. De Penske-coureur staat momenteel zesde in het klassement met 392 punten en met 58 punten achter leider Will Power. Met nog drie races voor de boeg en drie keer 54 punten te behalen, is er nog alles mogelijk.

Het seizoen begon welvarend met een overwinning en een tweede plek, maar is teleurgesteld over de foutjes en het kostbare puntenverlies. "Er zijn er zoveel", zei McLaughlin.

De Nieuw-Zeelander begon met een opsomming van al het misfortuin. "Als ik gewoon van het harde pedaal bleef in bocht drie en bij Indy 500 en daar niet crashte, zijn het punten. Toen Long Beach – ik raakte de binnenmuur bij Gumby en spinde; punten. In de Grand Prix van Indianapolis stonden we aan de leiding, kozen we de verkeerde banden; punten."

Toch ziet McLaughlin ook positieve ontwikkelingen sinds zijn entree in de Noord-Amerikaanse klasse. "We hebben dit jaar het tempo gehad en dat is alles wat ik ooit wilde. Vorig jaar was zwaar. Ik heb het altijd gezegd. Het is mentaal zwaar. Om terug te komen zoals we dit jaar hebben gedaan, is het een trots moment. Ik geloof nog steeds volledig dat ik een kampioenschap kan winnen."

"Ik heb het gevoel dat ik naar drie tracks ga waar ik echt van geniet, Gateway, Portland, Laguna. Ja, we zijn misschien niet de favoriet, maar ik denk dat ik als out-sider zal zijn zolang ik kan."

De volgende wedstrijd is 20 augustus op de oval van de World Wide Technology Raceway.

  Bwaah doe het meer dan aardig, hou hem maar in de gaten voor de komende seizoenen kan nog ver komen! deze kerel is echt wel geen gewone smurf check zijn palmares maar eens, daar staan mooie dingen op!
