Grosjean scoort pole in St. Pete, VeeKay door pech 24ste

Voormalig F1-coureur Romain Grosjean start voor de tweede keer in zijn IndyCar-carrière vanaf pole. In de straten van St. Petersburg (Fl.) was hij Andretti Autosport-teamgenoot Colton Herta de baas. Het was de eerste pole voor Grosjean sinds mei 2021, toen hij de eerste plaats behaalde voor de Grand Prix op de binnenbaan van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Grosjean leidde de Firestone Fast Six met een rondetijd van 59,5532 seconden in zijn opvallende gele DHL-bolide. Herta werd dus tweede, maar kwam met een 59.9687 niet in de buurt. "Vorig jaar was een heel goed einde van het seizoen, goede wintertests", zei Grosjean. "We kwamen hier en ik zei: 'Jongens, ja, ik denk dat we iets hebben.' We gaan het doen."

Pato O'Ward start als derde na een ronde van 1:00.0163 in de Arrow McLaren. ''Man, die Andretti-auto's zijn hier snel'', zei O'Ward. “We wisten dat het in het weekend zou gebeuren. Ik moet zeggen dat het team hier is aangekomen met zo'n goed pakket voor mij in vergelijking met vorig jaar. Vorig jaar zijn we echt met een achterstand begonnen. We hebben een auto om morgen mee te vechten."

Dat bij goed kwalificeren in de nauwe straten van St. Pete een beetje geluk komt kijken, ondervond de Nederlander Rinus VeeKay. De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur uit Hoofddorp kwam niet ver vanwege oponthoud door verkeer tijdens het eerste segment. Hierdoor start hij met zijn goud-witte #21-bolide als 24ste.

VeeKay was erg teleurgesteld over de gang van zaken zei hij onder andere via zijn sociale media kanalen. "Erg geïrriteerd door de situatie in de kwalificatie, gehinderd door auto's die bijna stil stonden... Het goed is dat we een van de snelste auto's hebben, dus we zouden morgen snel moeten opschuiven."

De wedstrijd in Sint Petersburg is zondagavond 18.00 uur Nederlandse tijd en is te zien op één van de ZiggoSport tv-zenders.

Hey Martijn, vind het altijd leuk dat je de Indycar and FE belicht maar als het op quali/race verslagen aankomt zou het dan ook mogelijk zijn om de volledige uitslag bij het artikel te plaatsen? Net zoals bij de F1 gebeurt?

Ik vind Rinus een prima kerel, en hoop dat ie veel succes zal hebben. Ik volg indy niet heel erg, maar pech lijkt wel een beetje een rode draad te worden in rinus zijn indy carriëre. Of heb ik een vertekend beeld?

  Of het echt pech is weet ik niet. Geluk dwing je ook af. Vind het jammer hoe zijn ontwikkeling lijkt te stagneren. Op de pole van de Indy 500 en het winnen van de Indy GP na zie ik niet hele geweldige resultaten.

Deze "pech" overkomt Veekay en ECR net iets te vaak om het pech te blijven noemen.

  Ed Carpenter Racing is een leuk familiair race team, maar ze zijn te klein. Ze zijn goed voor de indycar opstap, maar je moet ook een keer kunnen doorgroeien naar een van de grotere teams.
