Grosjean scoort in Alabama tweede pole op rij, VeeKay in top tien

Romain Grosjean flikte het weer op zaterdag. De 37-jarige Fransman reed tijdens de kwalificatie bij de Children's of Alabama Indy Grand Prix op Barber Motorsport Park naar zijn tweede pole op rij en zijn tweede van het seizoen.

Rinus VeeKay kwalificeerde zich voor het eerst dit seizoen in de top tien met een P9. In 2022 haalde de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur nog een sensationele pole in Alabama.

Het lukte VeeKay maar net om door te stoten naar de Fast Twelve. De 22-jarige eindigde als zesde en dat was net genoeg. Voor kampioenschapsleider Ericsson was het een minder leuke kwalificatie, want de Zweed viel net buiten de boot met P7 in Groep 1. In de tweede groep was Herta de enige opvallende naam die niet door mocht gaan.

In het tweede segment liet VeeKay zich andermaal van voren zien en noteerde met nog ongeveer sen minuut op de klok de tweede tijd. Maar de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur wist dat anderen met een snelle ronde nog bezig waren. De Nederlander kwam in de gevarenzone met nog een poging voor de boeg, maar hij schoot van de baan af. Ook regerend kampioen Will Power hield zijn auto niet onder controle. De Amerikaan was overigens niet blij met VeeKay zijn gedrag.

VeeKay was uitgeschakeld voor de Fast Six en start zondag dus op P9. De Nederlander zei voor de camera's van NBC dat een derde run niet het plan was, maar dat het het proberen waard is. De Hoofddorper was opgelucht dat hij geen rode vlag veroorzaakte - met als straf het schrappen van je snelste ronde. P8 is dan wel geen poleposition zoals in 2022, maar voor VeeKay voelde dat wel zo en hij was trots op het team na een moeilijk begin van het weekend.

Dixon, Grosjean, Palou, McLaughlin, Lundgaard en O'Ward gingen het gevecht aan om poleposition. Grosjean met zijn Andretti-bolide was de favoriet kijkend naar het tweede segment. De Fransman maakte die rol waar en pakte bij het vallen van de vlag zijn tweede pole op rij. Palou kwam nog dichtbij op het laatst, maar start met zijn Chip Ganassi op P2. O'Ward en McLaughlin beginnen op de tweede startrij.
