Herta wint superspannend gevecht om pole op Road America

Colton Herta had het niet makkelijk tijdens de IndyCar-kwalificatie voor de Sonsio Grand Prix op Road America, maar reed zichzelf op het allerlaatst naar poleposition. De Andretti-coureur versloeg de McLaren van Pato O'Ward, die P1 voor het grijpen had, maar door een slippertje op het laatst de eerste plek uit handen gaf. Voor Herta is dit zijn eerste poleposition van 2023 en negende in totaal.

Road America kent zero-tolerance door het old-skool-karakter van de baan. Het was ook geen verrassing dat sessie bestond uit meerdere spins, crashes en uitstapjes. Of het nieuwe asfalt de grootste boosdoener was, is niet met zekerheid te zeggen, maar veel coureurs kregen de softs met enige moeite in het juiste raamwerk.

Regerend kampioen Will Power beleefde onder andere een heftig moment bij uitkomen van de snelle doordraaier Carrousel, ging met hoge snelheid van de baan af en moest al hobbelend door het gras weer terugkomen op de baan.

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout hoopte weer eens door te stoten naar The Fast Twelve. Tijdens de laatste oefensessie trainde de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur nog een tiende tijd, maar tijdens de kwalificatie kwam de Hoofddorper niet verder dan de 15e plaats.

De Sonsio Grand Prix start vandaag om 19:30 uur Nederlandse tijd en de wedstrijd is te volgen op een van de kanalen van ZiggoSport.

Prachtige beelden van Dixon en Power die elkaar dwars zaten, Grosjean die weer eens aan het klungelen was, en Hunter-Ray die zijn auto in elkaar reed. Het nieuwe wegdek zorgde voor spectaculaire beelden.
Chips erbij vanavond vanaf 19.00 uur tot 22.00 uur INDYCAR en F1 !
