Het deelnemersveld van 1999 was om te smullen met namen als Juan Pablo Montoya, Tony Kanaan, Paul Tracy, Jan Magnussen, Dario Franchitti, Mark Blundell, Heilo Catroneves, Gil de Ferran en Jimmy Vasser.

Bij de teams was dat niet heel anders. Legendarische formaties zoals Penske en Chip Ganassi waren toen ook van de partij, maar de renstal die qua naam en qua livery het meeste opviel was Team Kool Green (dat nu Andretti Autosport heet).

In Toronto behaalde Team Kool Green een knappe dubbelzege in 1999. Dankzij een late neutralisatie kon de formatie met Franchitti en Tracy de 1-2 veilig stellen.

Team Kool Green was het beste team in 1999, maar de rijderstitel ging toch op het allerlaatst naar rookie Montoya. Franchitti en de Columbiaan eindigden samen op 212 punten maar Montoya had meer zeges. Tracy werd derde in de stand.

Toen waren de Indycars nog echt mooie auto's. Ik keek tussen 1995 en 2000 regelmatig races op Eurosport. Tegenwoordig met die rare lelijke windscherm auto's vind ik het helaas niet meer om aan te gluren.
