Pole voor Lundgaard tijdens spectaculaire kwalificatie in Toronto

Christian Lundgaard pakte zijn tweede poleposition van 2023 tijdens de spectaculaire kwalificatie voor de Honda Indy Toronto van zondag. De Deen hield op het hobbelige stratencircuit van ongeveer drie kilometer het hoofd koel in wisselende weersomstandigheden.

Qualifying in Toronto is Childs Play for @lundgaardoff.

Scott McLaughlin vergezeld de Rahal Letterman-coureur op de eerste rij. McLaren-rijder Pato O'Ward werd derde en Marcus Ericsson vierde. Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout kende een sterk begin van de sessie en scoorde met P12 een van zijn beste startposities van 2023. Klassementsleider Alex Palou was de tegenvaller van de dag met een P15 en liet zich verrassen door het weer.

Samenvatting

De baan was droog toen de eerste groep van twaalf coureurs naar buiten stormden. Er was flinke dreiging van regen dus iedere rijder wilde zo snel mogelijk een goed rondje klokken. VeeKay deed dat op het juiste moment en reed de tweede tijd voordat het begon te druppelen en mocht door naar de Fast Twelve. Topfavoriet Alex Palou was een van de ongelukkigen en piste naast het potje. De winnaar van de laatste drie IndyCar-races begint zondagavond op P15. Nummer twee en Chip Ganassi-teamgenoot Scott Dixon ging wel door.

De tweede groep met twaalf coureurs schroefde regenbanden onder de bolides, want ondertussen kwam het met bakken uit de hemel. De een na de ander spinde en iedereen zocht naar grip. De concurrenten van Palou, Josef Newgarden en Marcus Ericsson gingen door naar de Fast Twelve en kunnen in de race veel terrein goed maken.

Tijdens de Fast Twelve droogde de baan meer op, maar het was te nat om te kwalificeren op de slicks. VeeKay had moeite in de listige omstandigheden en kon niet meevechten om de voorste posities en start als twaalfde. De titelkandidaten Dixon en Newgarden lagen eruit, maar regerend kampioen en pole-recordhouder Will Power en nummer drie in stand Marcus Ericsson mochten samen met Christian Lundgaard, Pato O'Ward, Felix Rosenqvist en Scott McLaughlin.

In de strijd om pole begonnen de laatste zes overgebleven coureurs op verschillende bandentypes. O'Ward besloot het te proberen op slicks en de rest zag in dat het de beste keuze was en doken gelijk naar binnen voor normaal rubber. De baan was namelijk zo goed als droog.

De strijd om P1 was superspannend omdat de baan sneller werd. Aan de top was het continu stuivertje wisselen, maar het was dus voormalig F2-coureur Lundgaard die van pole gaat starten.

Laat gaan @Tyla, als @Knalpijp deze fraaie twaalfde plaats niet op waarde kan inschatten geeft hij daarmee aan de IndyCar niet echt te volgen...

  Palou blijft nog wel in de IndyCar denk ik, maar 2025 is echt een sleuteljaar waarin in de F1 veel wisselingen plaats kunnen vinden. Als Norris echt bij McLaren zou vertrekken staat Palou op pole position om dat McLaren stoeltje in de F1 te pakken.

Wat in tekst en beeld ontbreekt is dat Marcus Ericsson in het slotdeel van de kwalificatie een snelle ronde moest afbreken door geklungel van Scott McLaughlin.

  Waarom moeten we als nederlanders altijd talenten afkraken die op zeer respectabel niveau hun sport beoefenen, maar om 1 of andere reden niet tot top 10's top 5's, podia of overwinningen komen?
  
  Met 27 autos is er in indycar genoeg plek voor iemand die 12de kan worden.
