De beroemde 'Pass' van Zanardi in de Corkscrew - 1996

In 1996 streden Alessandro Zanardi en Bryan Herta om de zege op het iconische circuit van Laguna Seca. En het gevecht kreeg een wel heel bijzonder en spectaculaire afloop.

Op deze 3.6 kilometerlange baan is inhalen vanwege het bochtige karakter zeer lastig. Zanardi probeerde van alles om Herta te verschalken voor de eerste positie, maar keer op keer kwam hij van een koude kermis thuis.

Met nog één ronde te gaan, geeft Zanardi nog niet op. De Italiaan, in dienst van Target Ganassi Racing, zet nog één keer aan richting de fameuze bochtencombinatie 'Corkscrew'. Met een do-or-die-actie verraste hij Herta aan de binnenkant. Zanardi sscoot door, kwam naast de baan terecht, maar kon dankzij een extra stukje asfalt toch Herta inhalen en de zege op het allerlaatste moment opeisen.

Deze inhaalactie van Zanardi was - ondanks dat baanlimieten werden overschreden - zo speciaal dat manouvre de geschiedenisboeken inging als 'The Pass'. Hieronder de historische en prachtige beelden:
