Merhi verkleint gat naar Sainz na goed weekend in Hongarije

Roberto Merhi is kampioenschapsleider Carlos Sainz Jr. in de stand tot zestien punten genaderd. De twee coureurs vechten een Spaans onderonsje uit om de titel in de Formule Renault 3.5-klasse.

Dit weekend werd er gereden op de Hungaroring in Hongarije. Roberto Merhi wist de eerste race in de regen te winnen, terwijl Sainz niet verder kwam dan de vierde positie. Red Bull-junior Pierre Gasly hield zijn titelaspiraties nog enigszins levend door als tweede te eindigen, een plekje voor Oliver Rowland. De Nederlanders in het veld, Meindert van Buuren en Beitske Visser, wisten geen punten te scoren in de eerste race.

Merhi wist ook voor de tweede wedstrijd de pole position te veroveren, maar deze wist hij niet te verzilveren. De Spanjaard moest zijn meerdere erkennen in Norman Nato, maar Merhi liep met een tweede plaats wederom in op Sainz, die zesde werd. Pierre Gasly werd derde en mocht wederom naar het podium, terwijl Meindert van Buuren een ijzersterke wedstrijd reed. De Nederlander wist zich al als zesde te kwalificeren, en in de race wist hij nog een plekje te winnen. Beitske Visser werd twaalfde.

Met nog twee raceweekenden te gaan, is de strijd om de titel nog helemaal open. Sainz leidt met 177 punten, zestien meer dan Merhi. Pierre Gasly staat derde met 136 punten. Over twee weken wordt er verder gestreden in de Formule Renault 3.5. Dan wordt er gereden op het circuit van Paul Ricard.

Ocon is de 2e race niet gestart na een zware crash in de kwalificatie. De auto was niet meer (op tijd) te repareren.

Bij mijn weten is nog geen enkele Red Bull Junior er in geslaagd dit kampioenschap te winnen. Vergne en Ricciardo reden zelfs elkaar eraf in 2011, waarna Wickens (juist gedropt door RBR de titel pakte). Williamson werd geofferd voor Da Costa, die weliswaar veel races won, maar een jaar later ook onderging. Dit jaar twéé RBR-juniors (Gasly en Sainz) en toch komt Mehri ieder weekend dichterbij. Ook opvallend, Sirotkin blijft maar sukkelen en heeft weer een nulscore. Als het zo blijft is Sochi VT1 écht de laatste stuip van zijn carrière bij Sauber

Het is wel zo dat de stoeltjes bij Toro Rosso al verdeelt zijn. Misschien dat Red Bull hembij Caterham ofzo laat rijden, lijkt mij in ieder geval enige manier om een van hun in de F1 te laten rijden.

Mocht deze strategie gevolgd worden komt er bij max wel een stukje druk extra om te presteren, maar ik heb daar wel het vertrouwen in. Hopelijk volgend seizoen tenminste 3 regen races, dan komt het wel goed denk ik.

Carlos Jr is geen groot talent, heeft begin van het seizoen zijn slag geslaan omdat de rookies geen ervaring hadden. Nu zie je dat mannen als Gasly, Rowland en vooral Merhi sneller zijn. Merhi is een groot talent jammer van weggegooide DTM jaren bij Mercedes.

@Kooleracer; klopt dat er bij Sainz Jr nu niet uitkomt wat er inzit. Maar ik heb deze jongen toch dingen zien doen waarvoor je toch echt wat moet kunnen en zeker talent moet hebben. Maar het koord is dun, er zijn er al meer bezweken onder de druk van kampioenschapsleider.

Aan de andere kant; er is talent genoeg, maar om voor het grote werk in aanmerking te komen moet je ook beschikken over mega veel talent. Wat dat betreft zal de keuze van RBR om Max volgend jaar in de TR te zetten ook best hard aangekomen zijn bij Sainz JR en Da Costa... Die weten nu dat ze in 2015 in ieder geval geen Formule 1 rijden....

Sainz heeft ook pech gehad. 1e race op monza werkte zijn auto niet dus kon hij niet eens starten (hij had toen pole), en ook op de nurburgring was hij uitgevallen
