Sainz Jr. onbedreigd naar zege op Paul Ricard

Carlos Sainz Jr. heeft de eerste race op Paul Ricard naar zijn hand weten te zetten. De Spanjaard startte van pole position en reed zonder al te grote problemen naar de overwinning. Pierre Gasly en Matthieu Vaxiviere completeerden het podium.

De race op het Franse circuit kende weinig spektakel aan de kop van het veld. Sainz Jr. reed naar de zege, terwijl Gasly en Vaxiviere vrij eenvoudig een podiumplaats veilig stelden. titelkandidaat Roberto Merhi werd vijfde, een plaatsje achter Sauber-testcoureur Sergey Sirotkin.

Meindert van Buuren kende een sterke start vanaf de twintigste plaats, waarna hij zich met een beschadigde voorvleugel knap staande hield in het middenveld. Uiteindelijk viel de Nederlander echter uit met technische problemen. Beitske Visser kwam niet in het stuk voor en werd vijftiende.

Esteban Ocon, kampioenschapsleider in het Europees Formule 3-kampioenschap, was net als op de Hungaroring van de partij. De Fransman kan echter nog niet echt potten breken in de Formule Renault 3.5-klasse. Ocon werd in de eerste race veertiende.
