Sainz Jr. kan titel haast niet meer ontgaan na tweede zege

Carlos Sainz Jr. heeft ook de tweede race op Paul Ricard gewonnen. Met deze overwinning vergroot de Spanjaard zijn voorsprong in het kampioenschap tot 44 punten. De titel kan Sainz Jr. nu haast niet meer ontgaan.

Bij de start kwam polesitter Pierre Gasly redelijk van zijn plek, maar Sainz Jr. wist de Fransman al voor de eerste bocht te verschalken. Gasly schoot rechtdoor maar zou uiteindelijk nog als tweede finishen. Oliver Rowland mocht plaatsnemen op het laagste treetje van het podium.

Roberto Merhi kon op Paul Ricard niet tippen aan Sainz Jr. De nummer twee in het klassement werd vierde in de tweede race en zal alles op alles moeten zetten om nog een minimale kans te maken op de titel. Zijn kansen lijken echter verkeken en vermoedelijk gaat Sainz Jr. dit jaar met de titel aan de haal.

De Nederlanders in het veld behaalden geen punten in Frankrijk. Beitske Visser kwam met een elfde plaats nog dichtbij, maar kwam ongeveer twee seconden te kort op de tiende plaats van William Buller. Meindert van Buuren werd veertiende.

Er is nog één raceweekend te gaan in het Formule Renault 3.5-kampioenschap. De races worden verreden over twee weken op het circuit van Jerez de la Frontera.

Het is jammer voor Sainz dat Marko die nieuwe Ayrton Senna in zijn bezit heeft genomen, anders had hij zeker en vast volgend jaar voor Toro Rosso gereden.
