Zieke Sainz start eerste race in het achterveld

Carlos Sainz jr. heeft geen droomstart gemaakt tijdens het slotweekend van het Formule Renault 3.5-kampioenschap. De Spanjaard wordt geplaagd door een voedselvergiftiging en kwam tijdens de kwalificatie niet verder dan de vijftiende tijd.

Sainz jr. is niet de enige die tegenvalt in Jerez. Ook de andere titelkandidaat, Roberto Merhi, komt niet lekker uit de verf. Merhi start als tiende, maar moet winnen om nog kans te maken op de titel. Hierdoor lijkt Sainz ondanks zijn ziekte toch met het kampioenschap aan de haal te gaan.

De pole position voor de eerste race werd veroverd door Will Stevens. Sowieso was de kwalificatie een Brits feestje, want de complete top drie bestaat uit Britten. Oliver Rowland noteerde de tweede tijd, voor William Buller. Pietro Fantin en Sergey Sirotkin completeren de top vijf. De Nederlanders in het veld kwalificeerden zich in de middenmoot. Beitske Visser reed de twaalfde tijd, Meindert van Buuren de veertiende.

Merhi is al uit de race (getikt) dus de titel is voor Sainz jr.

Maar interessanter was de quote van No Comment Nelson dat de geruchten gaan dat Red Bull gaat stoppen met het sponsoren van coureurs in de opstapklasses. Dit is letterlijk het enige dat hij er over gezegd heeft, verder niks.
