Verstappen beslist: "Geen Champ Car"

Jos Verstappen wil niet langer wachten en heeft voor zichzelf de beslissing gemaakt en de knoop doorgehakt. De Limburger rijdt dit jaar geen Champ Car omdat hij lang moet wachten op antwoorden van de teams of ze met hem in zee willen. Verstappen wil niet wachten en heeft daarom zelf besloten niet te willen racen in de serie, omdat een goede voorbereiding erg belangrijk is.

Verstappen legt op zijn website het volgende uit aan zijn fans: "We zijn hier alweer drie maanden mee bezig en ik ben het wachten meer dan zat. Het is steeds weer hetzelfde politieke spelletje waarbij het alleen maar weer gaat om geld. Welnu, ze kennen mijn eisen en ze weten wat voor een coureur ik ben. Er is absoluut interesse van een aantal teams maar niemand hakt knopen door. Binnenkort is er nog een test dus wilde ik vandaag gewoon weten waar ik aan toe zou zijn. En niet twee dagen voor zo'n test waarbij ik dan weer hals over kop in het vliegtuig moet springen om die test af te raffelen. Ik wil me goed kunnen voorbereiden. We hebben niets meer vernomen van de geïnteresseerde teams dus voor mij is het nu over."

"Het is jammer voor iedereen. Ik verbeeld me niks, maar ik weet zeker dat Assen in no time uitverkocht zou zijn als ik daar had gereden. We weten allemaal nog wel hoe snel dat in Zandvoort ging, vorig jaar, met de A1GP. Ook qua kijkcijfers heb ik me nooit hoeven schamen. Iedereen kan hier van profiteren, de organisatie van Assen, de Champ Car organisatie en de fans. Het zou een fantastische win-win situatie kunnen worden. Alle betrokken partijen beseffen dat ook en ze doen allemaal hun best, dus in neem niemand iets kwalijk. Maar blijkbaar is het erg moeilijk om als coureur nog ergens onderdak te vinden als je gewoon voor je werk betaald wilt worden. Als je dan vervolgens maandenlang in het ongewisse wordt gelaten is de teleurstelling erg groot en dan zie ik er geen heil meer in. Zeker als je bedenkt dat ik niet wéér al mijn de fans zo lang in onzekerheid moet laten om vervolgens om één minuut voor twaalf ze te moeten teleurstellen. Zij hebben dat zeker niet verdiend."

Andere Nederlanders zoals Robert Doornbos, Charles Zwolsman en Nicky Pastorelli zijn ook druk bezig om een stoeltje te bemachtigen in de Champ Car-serie, een bevestiging is er nog niet geweest. Of Verstappen dit jaar nog zal racen in een klasse of dat er plannen zijn werd niet gemeld op zijn website.
