Gutierrez: "Leven als rookie in Formule 1 heel zwaar"

Esteban Gutierrez heeft zijn debuutseizoen in de Formule 1 voltooid met zes punten achter zijn naam. Alleen in Japan finishte hij in de top tien. De Mexicaan had het niet getroffen bij Sauber. De Zwitserse renstal beleefde een belabberde seizoensstart en tot overmaat van ramp verdrongen financiële perikelen het sportieve gedeelte naar de achtergrond.

Probeer je dan maar eens staande te houden als nieuwkomer. Gutierrez weet er alles van. "Het was uitdagend. De buitenwacht krijgt niet mee wat er allemaal achter de schermen gebeurt. Sauber heeft ook geen simulator, dat maakte het niet makkelijker voor mij. Het was niet zoals bij andere teams dat je in de simulator dingen uit kan proberen. Daar kwam de polemiek tijdens het seizoen over de financiële situatie van het team nog bovenop. Om als rookie daarmee om te springen was heel zwaar en kostte veel energie. Je moet erdoorheen en het is dan een uitdaging om gemotiveerd te blijven."

Het is twijfelachtig of Gutierrez zijn Formule 1-loopbaan mag vervolgen. Hij voorspelt in elk geval dat de rookies voor 2014 het nog zwaarder krijgen. "Debutanten hebben het de afgelopen jaren moeilijk om echt door te breken. Volgend seizoen met alle nieuwe onderdelen en reglementen is de uitdaging voor nieuwkomers alleen maar groter. Teams hebben genoeg andere dingen aan hun hoofd om dan aan de ontwikkeling van een rijder te denken. Dus het is belangrijk om als coureur ervaring en de juiste benadering te hebben."

Niet zo vreemd, aangezien het niveau van de huidige debutanten over het algemeen wat lager ligt dan voorheen.

Gemotiveerde mensen zat die zijn plekje willen overnemen! Ik denk alleen maar aan \'hij wiens naam wij niet mogen noemen\'.
