Ocon: "Strijd in het middenveld zal het hele seizoen duren"

Volgens Esteban Ocon zal de strijd in het middenveld pas beslist worden tijdens de seizoensafsluiter in Abu Dhabi. De Force India-coureur eindigde tijdens de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk als zesde, maar moest wel beide Haas-rijders voor zich dulden. Volgens de Fransman verschillen de verhoudingen per weekend en blijft het spannend.

“Ze waren erg snel", vertelt Ocon in gesprek met de officiële Formule 1-website over het team van Haas. "We pakken ze een andere keer wel weer. Ik was erg blij voor mijn team en het resultaat; zesde en zevende. Ook was er duidelijke communicatie tegen het einde van de race met Sergio Perez over de afwijkende strategie."

In Oostenrijk was Haas te snel voor Force India, maar volgens Ocon kan dat de komende races zomaar anders zijn. "We konden Magnussen in de slotfase niet inhalen, maar we blijven pushen de komende races. Het verschil in het middenveld is klein. De strijd is losgebarsten en die zal het hele seizoen duren."

    Zou keer leuk zijn als een middenveld team (Force India, Haas, Renault) een keer op het podium raakt.

      Ik zie het zonder extreem veel uitvallers helaas niet meer gebeuren dit seizoen. Vroeger kon een achterhoede of middenveld team nog wel eens verassen met een aparte strategie, of wanneer hun strategie geholpen werd door een safety car of regenperiode, tegenwoordig worden ze tijdens de eerste stint al op een halve ronde gezet waardoor de top 3 zonder posities te verliezen kan pitten, en als er al een keer een middenveld team op kop rijdt worden ze meteen ingehaald door het enorme snelheidsverschil.

      Dat is gewoon onzin. Regen of gewoon enorm veel uitvallers was de reden dat die middenvelders al wel eens op het podium kwamen. Zoals dit jaar dus ook gebeurde in Baku. Qua voorsprong ligt de huidige F1 nog altijd dichter bij elkaar dan 20 jaar geleden. Dit is de eerste keer dat alleen de top 3 binnen een ronde aankwam, en dan nog door de vele opgaves van de topteams. Vroeger was dit eerder regel dan uitzondering, zeker in de jaren van McLaren en Williams-dominantie.
