'Teams lopen kans op financiële problemen met keuze voor jong talent'

Alain Prost baalt van de huidige situatie rond de coureurs in de Formule 1. De viervoudig wereldkampioen ziet dat het vrijwel onmogelijk is om zonder geld de koningsklasse van de autosport te halen, want teams hebben het geld van een betalende coureur vaak hard nodig.

Esteban Ocon moet in 2019 zijn plekje bij Force India waarschijnlijk afstaan aan Lance Stroll, wiens vader het team eerder dit jaar overkocht. Daarmee lijkt een jong talent zonder eigen geld wederom genoegen te moeten nemen met een plek langs de zijlijn. Ocon had misschien bij Renault kunnen plaatsnemen, maar dat team koos voor Daniel Ricciardo. Toto Wolff had veel kritiek op die beslissing van Renault, maar Prost vindt dat de Oostenrijker vooral naar zichzelf moet kijken. "Toto Wolff bekritiseerde Renault daarvoor, maar waarom heeft hij Valtteri Bottas bij Mercedes niet vervangen door Ocon?"

Prost baalt ervan dat de talenten niet de kansen krijgen die ze verdienen, maar ziet ook teams het zich niet kunnen veroorloven om een betalende coureur te weigeren. "Het is tegenwoordig lastig om de Formule 1 te bereiken zonder geld. De carrières van coureurs beginnen steeds eerder. Een kind van 4 wordt in de karts gezet en groeit later door de opleidingsklassen, waarvoor je veel financiële steun nodig hebt."

"Om zich voor te bereiden op de toekomst profiteren ze van tests met oudere bolides. Toen ik nog teambaas was, had ik ook te maken met de keuze tussen een jong talent en een coureur met geld. Als je het eerste kiest, loop je het risico dat je team in financiële problemen komt."

  Dat is wat Prost zegt, met Ricciardo koop je zekerheid dat betaald zich terug. Met Ocon neem je risico immers minder punten betekend minder geld.

  Het was ooit de droom van Renault/Prost om met een Fransman de titel te pakken. Het is alleen nog de vraag of deze doelstelling nu nog actueel is.

  Renault is een team in ontwikkeling, Natuurlijk Maar voor de komende 3 jaar zijn ze er nog niet waar ze willen. kortweg gezegd die 35 miljoen konden ze beter in hun auto & motor ontwikkeling steken dan een duur coureur... Het is nog lang niet zeker dat een top coureur een team kan bouwen zolang de organisatie er gewoon niet staat. wil niet zeggen dat ocon een topcoureur is. Aangezien hulkenberg ook geen slechte coureur is, snap ik zelf ook niet de overwaarde van Ricciardo niet, is alleen een steen van 35 miljoen. Renault coureur hebben de 2de helft van seizoen alleen last gehad van de huidige ontwikkelings beleid van de franse ploeg. Mercedes zat niet in de weg, maar is denk ik vooral iets politieks wat men voert..

  Er was een deal dat Ocon bij Renault zou gaan rijden volgend jaar. 2 dagen later werd die van tafel geveegd omdat ze Ricciardo hadden aangenomen.
  
  Wat Prost betreft: Talenten krijgen wel degelijk de kans om zich te bewijzen. Als je kijkt naar de top van de F1, HAM, VET, VER, LEC, is dat allemaal talent wat zich met geen of beperkte middelen naar boven heeft weten te werken.
  
  Ik zou eerder zeggen dat gebleken is dat Ocon niet genoeg talent heeft, nog de financiële middelen.

@ringo, ricciardo is totaal ander verhaal, renault betaal juist 35 miljoen voor hem. dat is heel wat anders dan een paydriver.

@erikworld dat is niet wat prost zegt, prost baalt ook dat renault (abiteboul) voor ricciardo heeft gekozen. prost wil gewoon zeggen dat in de meeste F1 teams het geld boven talent kiest en dat vooral om het hoofd boven water te houden.

Het is nou eenmaal een dure sport, so what? Dus je moet vermogend zijn of sponsoren hebben. Wat is daar nou zo bijzonder aan? In iedere sport zijn er toptalenten die het uiteindelijk niet halen. Prost die baalt daar zogenaamd van. Je bent wel bereid om 30 miljoen voor Ricciardo uit te trekken, maar een talent in een auto te zetten die meestal ook nog eens door z'n eigen sponsor betaald wordt vind je een risico? Zou zeggen, ga dan zelf het goede voorbeeld geven.
