Overzicht: Coureurs en teams beoordeeld - Racing Point Force India

Lewis Hamilton werd in 2018 voor de vijfde keer wereldkampioen en daarmee kwam hij gelijk te staan met Juan Manuel Fangio en nog maar twee wereldtitels verwijderd van recordhouder Michael Schumacher. De winterstop is inmiddels alweer even aangebroken en daarom is het tijd om de coureurs en teams te beoordelen. De cijfers en beoordelingen zijn volledig subjectief en er valt dus over te discussiëren. We gaan verder met het team dat op de zevende positie in het kampioenschap is geëindigd, Racing Point Force India.

Voor Racing Point Force India is het wellicht het meest chaotische seizoen geworden van alle teams. Het team begon nog gewoon onder de naam die het de afgelopen jaren gebruikte, Force India. Gedurende het seizoen sijpelden er echter steeds meer berichten naar buiten dat het team, onder leiding van Vijay Mallya, geldproblemen kende.

Die werden zelfs zo heftig, dat het gedurende het seizoen onzeker werd of het team kon blijven voortbestaan. In die hoedanigheid bleek dat ook niet te kunnen en daarom werd het team opgekocht door een consortium onder leiding van Lawrence Stroll en de naam veranderde in Racing Point Force India. Alle punten die onder de oude naam waren behaald, mochten echter niet worden meegenomen.

Er moest dit seizoen echter ook nog worden geracet en dat ging het team weer goed af. Net als in de afgelopen jaren was Racing Point Force India weer regelmatig richting de top van het middenveld te vinden. In 2016 en 2017 werd twee keer achter elkaar de vierde positie binnengehaald achter de topteams.

Dat was dit jaar niet mogelijk, omdat het dus midden in het seizoen al zijn punten kwijtraakte. Wanneer je echter de punten van Force India en Racing Point Force India bij elkaar zou optellen, dan zou het team op 111 punten uitkomen en daarmee stevig op de vijfde plek staan. Niet slecht voor een klein team dat zo'n chaotisch seizoen heeft meegemaakt.

De coureurs van het team deden net als in de afgelopen jaren niet veel voor elkaar onder. Er werden regelmatig punten gescoord en het beste resultaat van het team kwam al vroeg in het seizoen, toen het nog Force India heette.

Sergio Perez wist namelijk een podiumplek te pakken in Bakoe en dat was dit seizoen de enige podiumplek voor een coureur die niet bij Mercedes, Ferrari of Red Bull Racing reed. Hij wist met 62 punten ook dertien punten meer te scoren dan zijn teamgenoot Esteban Ocon.

De Fransman eindigde op 49 punten, maar kende ook een redelijk sterk en stabiel seizoen. Vooral in de kwalificatie was hij ijzersterk, aangezien Ocon zijn teamgenoot op zaterdag met 16-5 wist te verslaan. Helaas bleek dat niet genoeg te zijn om zijn plek in de Formule 1 te behouden. Hij raakt zijn plekje voor 2019 kwijt aan Lance Stroll, de zoon van de nieuwe eigenaar.
