Ocon: "Racing Point kan gat richting top 3 grotendeels dichten"

Het voormalige Force India gold als een van de minst rijke teams van de grid. Desondanks wist het team in 2016 en 2017 vierde te worden bij de constructeurs. Esteban Ocon denkt dat het team, dat tegenwoordig Racing Point heet, in 2019 het gat richting de top 3 voor een groot deel kan dichten.

Force India werd halverwege het seizoen 2018 onder curatele gesteld. Dat proces leidde uiteindelijk tot de overname van het team door een consortium, dat geleid wordt door Lawrence Stroll. Hij doopte het team om in Racing Point en zorgde ervoor dat het team het seizoen gewoon kon afmaken. Uiteindelijk werd het team van Esteban Ocon en Sergio Perez zevende in het constructeurskampioenschap.

Ocon werd na het seizoen aan de kant gezet: hij moest plaats maken voor Lance Stroll. Desondanks heeft de Fransman hoge verwachtingen van Racing Point voor het nieuwe seizoen, mede doordat het team er financieel nu beter voor staat. "Ze moeten een enorm gat goedmaken, maar ze zullen absoluut een stap vooruit zetten. Geld is altijd een probleem geweest, maar komend jaar wordt dit een minder groot probleem. Ik denk dat ze sterk zullen zijn."

Tegenover Motorsport.com liet Ocon ook weten dat hij in zijn twee seizoen bij Force India vooral onder de indruk was van de werkhouding. De reservecoureur van Mercedes ziet dat als doorslaggevend in het succes het kleine team. "Vorig jaar was ik erg onder de indruk van het professionalisme van dit team en de motivatie die ze hebben om resultaten te behalen. Ze zijn hongerig en dat maakt het verschil. Ze telden de uren niet."

"We vlogen bijvoorbeeld terug uit Mexico en kwamen om 2 uur 's nachts aan in Groot-Brittannië. Om 8 uur 's ochtends werkten we vervolgens in de simulator. Iedereen was gesloopt, ik ook, maar we werkten wel door. Daarom waren we zo competitief op het circuit, zelfs zonder de inkomsten. Met geld wordt het makkelijker voor ze."

  Wat een kul verhaal als je uit Mexico komt is dat 9 uur vliegen met een tijd verschil van 6uur naar a.dam.
  Dan kom je aan op maandag om 1600 uur met een wedstrijd van 2uur.
  Je hebt een giga jetlag en daarna terug naar Brazilië een week later.

Met geld kan je veel bereiken maar je hebt wel de juiste mensen nodig. Dat gaat lastiger worden. Want die zitten grotendeels al bij de ´top 3´. Maar ik hoop dat ze het Renault lastig kunnen maken voor P4. Ook Sauber en Haas moeten dat kunnen. Mclaren is nog even afwachten denk ik.

  Ik denk dat zelfs Toro Rosso het McLaren moeilijk gaat maken in 2019. p4 zie ik ook niet als zekerheidje naar Renault gaan alhoewel ze wel een duidelijk voordeel hebben met hun coureurs: 2 betrouwbare puntenscoorers. Op powercircuits gaan alle Renault teams het lastig hebben om überhaupt in Q2 te komen denk ik. Verwacht niet dat Renault veel pk's erbij heeft gekregen deze winter t.o.v. spec C waar RedBull nog mee reed

Denken kunnen we allemaal het wil niet zeggen als je nu meer geld hebt ook in een keer veel beter wordt. Als ik mijn geld moest zetten welk team het dichts bij de top 3 zou komen dan zou ik voor TR kiezen.

Ben ik de enige die denkt dat Racing Point gaat tegenvallen? Veel geld wilt niet zeggen dat ze per definitie beter gaan worden. Juist door de zuinigheid bouwde FI degelijke auto's. Nu dit niet meer nodig is bestaat er een risico dat ze door dit stapje omhoog misschien teveel van zichzelf gaan vragen. Kijk maar naar Williams van afgelopen jaar.

Ik blijft daarnaast Stroll een hele matige coureur vinden.
