Gedurende het seizoen 1985 reed Ayrton met de Lotus 97T. De auto was ontwikkeld door Gérard Ducarouge en Martin Ogilvie. De 97T was een doorontwikkeling van de Lotus 95T uit 1984. De auto maakte gebruik van een 1.5 Liter Turbomotor van Renault die ongeveer 800 pk produceerde. De sponsoring kwam van John Player Special.

De 97T was in feite een makkelijk design en gebruikte diverse elementen die door Roy Winkelmann voor de 96T (het IndyCar model van Lotus) gebruikt waren. Het was ook de eerste auto die gebruik maakte van een soort van bargeboards. Deze bargeboards werden een ontdekking in de jaren tachtig en werden in de loop der jaren doorontwikkeld in extremere vormen.

Het ontwerp van Gérard Ducarouge was had in de loop van het seizoen te maken met betrouwbaarheidsproblemen. Het behoorde in 1985 tot het beste op de grid. Het had een goede rem balans en was vriendelijk voor de banden. Het maakte tevens gebruik van een aparte ontwikkelde wielophanging. Op aerodynamisch vlak was de auto minder dan de McLaren MP4-2B. Aangezien het chassis goed was en de mechanische grip een uitstekend werkbare auto produceerde kon de Lotus op korte, bochtige circuit uitstekend voor de dag komen. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat de Lotus gedurende het seizoen 1985 hoge ogen gooide tijdens regenraces en korte circuits. De auto scoorde zeven pole positions en drie overwinningen.

  wauw kan je er nog iets van herinneren Snork? Ik was in Juli 1985 nog in Zandvoort maar niet een maand later toen de GP er was...helaas helaas...mijn ouders keken geen sport en ik was pas 3,5 jaar oud lol.

  Jazeker, ik was toen 13. Door Senna ben ik fan van F1 geworden.
  Ik heb nog op 10 meter afstand van hem gestaan toen hij tijdens een training stilviel en op een hekje ging zitten waar ik vlak achter op de duin zat te kijken.

1985: 1.5 liter turbo - 800 pk.
2019: 1.6 liter turbo hybride - ca. 1000pk
Niet slecht wat ze in 1985 al aan vermogen produceerden.
Alleen was betrouwbaarheid een issue, Senna viel 7 keer uit in 16 races. Één daarvan door een crash op Paul Riccard.

Wat een prachtauto... helaas onbetrouwbaar. Toch vind ik van alle Senna auto's de Lotus auto's op de een of andere manier nog steeds het mooiste. Ook de gele Lotus uit 1987 vind ik echt heel gaaf.
