Het bestuur van Red Bull Racing en AlphaTauri gaat maandag in gesprek om de toekomst van beide teams te bespreken. Door het vertrek van de motorfabrikant Honda in 2022, moet het team nu een noodoplossing zoeken voor het 2022 tot en met het 2025-seizoen. In 2026 komen er nieuwe motorreglementen en wil het team overstappen op een nieuwe fabrikant. Dit zou dan het Duitse Volkswagen/Porsche worden, maar dat is nog niet helemaal duidelijk of die dat zelf ook willen.

Red Bull wil tot dit tijd gebruik maken van de technologie van Honda. Het overweegt de motorfabrikant over te nemen, voor een deel, en het in eigen huis te gaan implementeren. Alleen als Red Bull dat gaat doen, moet er wel een stop komen op de ontwikkeling van de motoren. Helmut Marko zou zelfs boos naar Ferrari zijn gegaan, omdat dat team als enige tegenstrijd.

Een vertrek uit de Formule 1 is de laatste optie, maar ook een mogelijke. Helmut Marko zegt deze optie liever niet te willen. "We willen in de Formule 1 blijven", wordt Marko geciteerd door f1-insider.com. “Maar we moeten ook kunnen racen om te winnen. Als dat niet kan omdat wij, als normale motorklanten, de nadelen te groot vinden, dan heeft het geen zin om eraan vast te houden.”

AlphaTauri volgt

Wat wel duidelijk is, is dat wat er ook wordt besloten voor het hoofdteam van Red Bull, het kleine broertje, AlphaTauri, dit voorbeeld zal volgen. "Ik wil niet dat we onze eigen versnellingsbakken, achterwielophanging en andere componenten opnieuw moeten ontwerpen. We willen de samenwerking tussen de twee teams blijven versterken", zei teambaas Franz Tost.
