Marko over Mercedes: "Alléén daar verliezen zij tijd"

Tijdens de eerste twee vrije trainingen leek het erop dat voor de verandering het team van Mercedes niet het snelste was. Tijdens de eerste training stond Mercedes negende en vijftiende, en tijdens de twee training stond Mercedes derde en vierde, met een halve seconde naar Verstappen op P1. Echter, Helmut Marko denkt te weten waar Mercedes die tijd verliest.

Volgens de Red Bull Racing-adviseur had met name Valtteri Bottas veel moeite in de tweede sector van Istanbul Park. "Dat is waar zij met afstand het meeste verloren", aldus Helmut Marko. "Jammer genoeg was het alléén bocht-8 waar zij echt tijd verloren, en meestal is een gebrek aan snelheid in één bocht makkelijk te verhelpen", zo vertelt de Oostenrijker.

De grip op het asfalt van Istanbul Park is dan ook nog steeds erg laag. Veel coureurs wisten niet de banden op de juiste temperatuur te krijgen, wat ervoor zorgde dat coureurs vaak spinden. Dit werd nog duidelijker tijdens de derde vrije training, waar dit effect op een natte baan alleen maar erger werd. "De grip-levels zullen niet verbeteren, verwacht ik", aldus Helmut Marko.

Wie zal vanmiddag de poleposition pakken voor de Grand Prix van Turkije? Zien we weer een klassieke Mercedes 1-2, of kan iemand anders voor een verrassing zorgen?
