Helmut Marko zwakt belang van nieuw brandstofmengsel af

Red Bull Racing bracht vorige week een persbericht naar buiten om aan te kondigen dat partner ExxonMobil een nieuwe brandstof heeft ontwikkeld voor het komende Formule 1-seizoen. Het nieuwe brandstofmengsel zou op maat gemaakt zijn voor de nieuwe Honda-motor en meer vermogen, meer performance en een verbeterde bescherming leveren.

Dat klonk de puristen, fans en kenners als muziek in de oren. Motorenspecialist Mario Illien liet zich tegenover Auto Bild ontglippen: "Je kunt een kampioenschap verliezen omdat je op gebied van brandstof en olie- en smeermiddelen achterloopt op de concurrentie. Een nieuw brandstofmengsel kan wel goed zijn voor 5 pk extra."

Red Bull-motorsportadviseur Helmut Marko blaast minder hoog van de toren. Hij vindt het niet meer dan logisch dat ExxonMobil met een nieuwe brandstof op de proppen is gekomen. "Het is vrij normaal dat de brandstofmengsels en olie- en smeermiddelen elk jaar verbeterd worden. Alle brandstofleveranciers bij de overige teams doen hetzelfde."

Het nieuwe brandstofmengsel is slechts een van vele factoren die samen moeten komen om een succesvol seizoen te beleven. Pierre Wache, technisch directeur bij Red Bull Racing, verwoordt het zo: "We zien op de testbank al enkele vroege tekenen van vooruitgang ten opzichte van vorig jaar. Ik denk dat het een combinatie is van de ontwikkeling van de motor en de brandstof van ExxonMobil."

"Ik weet zeker dat alle teams en krachtbronnen winst hebben geboekt, dus we weten momenteel niet of we een voorsprong ten opzichte van de rest hebben. We zijn erg dankbaar voor het werk dat onze partners tijdens de winter hebben verricht. Nu kunnen we alleen maar hopen dat de combinatie met het RB16B-chassis sterk genoeg is om het op te nemen tegen de besten in deze wedloop tussen de beste engineers."

Zoals Toto het benadert, elke marginale bijdrage aan een snellere auto moet je pakken. Het is de som van vele kleine verbeteringen die uiteindelijk de auto tienden van seconden sneller maakt.

  Logisch @Snork, zodra de grote stappen vooruitgang er niet meer inzitten worden de kleine stapjes vooruit beslissend. Mercedes zat in die comfortabele positie en is niet stil gaan zitten maar heeft zich op de details geconcentreerd. Dezelfde strategie heeft Porsche bij het voortdurend blijven ontwikkelen van de 911 in feite ook gehanteerd.

  Klopt Snelrondje. De grote gains zijn al lang genomen, met de huidige generatie auto's en motoren zit het nu in kleine verbetering op diverse fronten, die de auto uiteindelijk weer een stukje sneller maken.
  In dat opzicht kijk ik erg uit naar 2022, wanneer de auto's fundamenteel anders zijn en vooral de downforce uit grondeffect moeten krijgen. Welke teams zijn daar het slimst in, welke afwijkende concepten zullen we zien zoals we nu het high en low rake concept bijvoorbeeld kennen.
  In de tijd dat F1 met grondeffect auto's rondreed is er toen flink op los geinnoveerd en zijn diverse oplossingen bijna direct teruggefloten. Denk aan het dubbele chassis van de Lotus 88, waarbij het bodywork onder alle omstandigheden zo strak als mogelijk boven het asfalt bleef, om zo minimaal drukverlies onder de bodem te bereiken. Was een geniaal idee, maar was direct ook verboden. Dat waren geen marginal gains.
