Marko had comeback Mercedes al verwacht

Bij aankomst in Barcelona, afgelopen donderdag, voorspelde Helmut Marko van Red Bull Racing een nieuwe pikorde: "Red Bull, Mercedes en dan Ferrari. Op vrijdag was het kampioenschapsleider Charles Leclerc in zijn Ferrari met updates die de leiding nam in de trainingen, met Mercedes als verrassende tweede en derde in de middag. Ook op de zaterdag was Leclerc de snelste coureur tijdens de derde training als in de kwalificatie.

Zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton zei dat hij superblij was dat Mercedes zijn porpoising probleem lijkt te hebben opgelost. Teambaas Toto Wolff reageerde: "We waren ook in Miami sterk op de vrijdag. Ik denk dat we meer vermogen gebruikten dan Red Bull en Ferrari, maar misschien zitten we er niet zo ver vanaf. We zullen moeten zien wanneer de grip zich opbouwt en iedereen de motoren op toeren brengt en het er op aankomt hoe veel last wij van het stuiteren zullen hebben."

Het was weer een teken van hoop voor het Duitse team, dat naar verluidt zelfs overwoog om het unieke 'no sidepods'-concept van zijn problematische 2022-auto te schrappen. Hamilton: "Ik wil niet zeggen dat ik een mening heb over of het ontwerp goed of fout is. Maar ik denk dat zoals Toto zei, we dit weekend zullen begrijpen of we in de juiste richting zitten. Zo niet, dan slaan we de handen ineen en gaan we een andere richting op."

Ondanks Marko's wilde voorspelling dat Mercedes Ferrari in Barcelona zou verslaan, kan dat ook wishful thinking zijn geweest. Hij zegt dat Red Bull binnen een tiende van de geüpdatete Ferrari zit. De voorspelling dat Mercedes in de buurt zit heeft Marko echter goed gegokt, want tijdens de training en kwalificatie leek Russell een outsider voor de pole position.

Het kan aan mij liggen maar 0.600 op deze baan is gewoon nog een flinke achterstand hoor. dat is op andere banen al gauw een seconde. Max had er zonder DRS problemen ook ver voor gestaan. Ze zullen echt wel iets beter zijn geworden, maar het gat is nog redelijk groot, ik ben benieuwd naar de racepace vanmiddag.

  Elk jaar is er wel een team dat in één race uitzonderlijk presteert ten opzichte van hun gebruikelijke prestaties dat jaar. Vorig jaar Williams in Spa, of McLaren in Monza. Dit jaar Mercedes in Barcelona.

Misschien stel ik een domme vraag maar van waar de euforie? Mercedes ligt nog steeds ruim een halve seconde achter. Ja oké, ze zijn nu duidelijk het derde team en hebben een goede stap gemaakt. Maar comeback? Ze vechten nog steeds niet op eigen kracht voor de overwinning en hebben geluk nodig voor een podium.
Sorry dat ik nog niet op die roze wolk, maar ik zie het gewoon nog niet.

Russell blijft overigens puik werk leveren. Heb hem altijd nóg beter gevonden dan Norris, alleen kon je dat in een Williams moeilijk laten zien.

  Een comeback moet ergens beginnen en tot dit weekend was er zelfs nog geen begin (je kunt de vrijdag in Miami daar niet toe rekenen) en die comeback lijkt nu ingezet te zijn.....
