O'Ward jaagt op Formule 1-zitje: "Kan altijd terugkeren in IndyCar"

IndyCar-coureur Patricio O'Ward maakte dit jaar in Abu Dhabi zijn officieuze debuut tijdens een Formule 1-weekend. De Mexicaan reed de eerste vrije training voor het team van McLaren en dat smaakte naar meer. Ondanks zijn huidige IndyCar-successen wil O'Ward alles opgeven voor een stoeltje in de koningsklasse van de autosport.

O'Ward rijdt in de IndyCar voor het team van McLaren. In die hoedanigheid mocht hij vorig jaar dan ook al in actie komen tijdens de post season test in Abu Dhabi. De Mexicaan werd dit jaar aangewezen voor een vrije training aangezien de teams verplicht zijn om minimaal twee keer een rookie in te zetten tijdens een vrije training.

Titelkandidaat

Die sessie smaakte naar meer voor O'Ward en hij wil dan ook blijven jagen op zijn IndyCar-droom. De Mexicaanse coureur doet daar niet moeilijk over in gesprek met RACER: "Ik denk dat ik altijd zou kunnen terugkeren in de IndyCar, de ruimte om de Formule 1 binnen te komen is wat krapper. Ik zat al in de IndyCar en voor mijn idee was ik daar elk jaar een titelkandidaat. Ik houd van het racen in de IndyCar. Het is één van de beste raceklassen ter wereld, misschien wel de beste als het gaat om de competitie."

Opgroeien

De IndyCar is voor O'Ward echter niet de ultieme droom. De Mexicaanse McLaren-coureur wil dus doorgroeien en zijn reden daarvoor is duidelijk: "Toen ik opgroeide keek ik naar de Formule 1. Dat was mijn droom, net als die van veel andere coureurs op de wereld. Dat is dan ook wat mijn liefde voor andere klassen veroorzaakte. Ik wil nog steeds mijn switch maken naar de Formule 1. Of en wanneer het gaat gebeuren? Ik weet het niet maar ik heb een goed team achter mij."

Sympathieke gozer... maar ik heb mn twijfels over hoe goed hij is. Denk dat hij volgend jaar een flinke kluif krijgt aan zijn 2 teamgenoten... om nog maar te zwijgen van de Penske's en Ganassi's.

Andretti zwakt een beetje af in vorm. Herta is niet constant, Grosjean heeft te veel ruzie met zijn collega's en Kirkwood is er nog niet klaar voor denk ik. Oja en dan was er nog een canadese paydriver.

  Jij ziet het scherp Larry! Dat ene jaartje plus het inzicht dat de "indy car" talenten doorgaans over de afgelopen pak 'm beet 44 jaar niet per definitie een relevante toevoeging zouden zijn aan het F1 veld van dat moment (uitzonderingen daargelaten), zeg ik Pato, prima keuze voor ieder team.
