De ongenaakbare Ayrton Senna won de Grand Prix van Europa in 1993 met 83 seconden voorsprong op nummer twee Damon Hill. De snelste raceronde kwam niet geheel verrassend achter zijn naam, maar opmerkelijk was die wel. In de verregende wedstrijd op Donington Park was zijn tijd 1.18.029, maar die behaalde de drievoudig kampioen door flink gas te geven in de pitstraat.

Wat was er aan de hand? Senna wilde zijn banden wisselen. Echter, zijn team McLaren stond niet klaar. De Braziliaan besloot om flink door te rijden en reed daarmee onbedoeld de snelste raceronde. Deze route door de pitstraat bleek sneller te zijn dan de normale weg via het 4 kilometer lange parcours.

Senna kreeg geen straf voor dit tafereel, want in 1993 bestond er geen snelheidslimiet in de pit lane. Hieronder is een voorbeeld van hoe hard het ging.

Rondvliegende band

Na het zwarte weekend van Imola in 1994 had elke coureur een snelheidsbegrenzer tot zijn beschikking tijdens een raceweekend. Het doel was - logischerwijs - om coureurs en degenen die werkten in de pitstraat te beschermen. Ook moesten teamleden vanaf dat moment in de pitbox verblijven als er geen pitstop was.

De aanleiding van deze verandering kwam door een incident in de pitstraat tijdens de race in Imola. Wat was er gebeurd? De Minardi van Michele Alboreto verloor zijn rechterachterband bij het verlaten van een stop, die door de pitlane stuiterde en de Lotus- en Ferrari-crews raakte die buiten hun garages stonden. Twee van hen moesten naar het ziekenhuis.

Boetes

De snelheidslimiet door de pitstraat is momenteel 80 km/u, hoewel de wedstrijdleider per locatie kan bepalen hoe snel elke coureur door de pit lane mag rijden. In Monaco is de pitstraat zo smal dat de limiet 60 km/u is.

Teams krijgen een boete van € 100 voor elke km/u die ze de limiet overschrijden tot € 1000, hoewel er extra straffen kunnen worden opgelegd als de stewards vermoeden dat een coureur probeert voordeel te behalen.
