Marko trots op mijlpaal: "Verdrietig dat Mateschitz er niet bij kon zijn"

Max Verstappen won afgelopen weekend in Canada de honderdste Grand Prix uit de geschiedenis van zijn team Red Bull Racing. Red Bull was zeer trots op het resultaat en ook teamadviseur Helmut Marko was enorm blij. Marko was best gespannen voorafgaand de race en denkt terug aan de begindagen van het team.

Verstappen was in Montreal zeer dominant. De Nederlandse Red Bull-coureur was in de kwalificatie van een ander niveau, hij kwam in Q2 en Q3 direct de baan op en was veel sneller dan de concurrentie. Op de zondag reed hij bij de start weg bij de rest van het veld en gaf hij de leiding op geen enkel moment uit handen. De zege was daarna historisch, Verstappen evenaarde namelijk Ayrton Senna en won dus de honderdste race voor Red Bull.

Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko is al sinds het begin in 2005 betrokken bij het team. Hij zag toen een andere sfeer en laat in de F1 Nation Podcast weten hoe hij zich voelde: "Ik dacht dat dit een race zou zijn zoals alle anderen, maar dat was niet het geval. Ik ben nu kalm en ik ben opgelucht dat we dit hebben bereikt, maar het is nog steeds ongelooflijk. Toen we Jaguar opkochten hadden we niet heel veel geld op de tafel gelegd. Dietrich Mateschitz zei dat we moesten proberen een race te winnen. Ik vind het heel verdrietig dat hij er vandaag niet bij kon zijn."

Het viel me op dat Max tijdens de beide volksliederen strak voor zich uit
naar rechts keek en geen oogcontact zocht, zoal hij gewoonlijk doet,
en daarbij heel serieus keek.
Ik moest op dat moment zelf aan Mateschitz denken en het leek erop
dat Max dat ook deed.

Het viel me op dat Max tijdens de beide volksliederen strak voor zich uit
naar rechts keek en geen oogcontact zocht, zoal hij gewoonlijk doet,
en daarbij heel serieus keek.
Ik moest op dat moment zelf aan Mateschitz denken en het leek erop
dat Max dat ook deed.

  Vergelijkbaar met Cota vorig jaar. Alleen waren toen ook de ogen glazig. Daar vocht hij tegen de tranen.
  Verstappen is helemaal niet zo nuchter als men beweert. Denk dat zijn directheid soms zo wordt uitgelegd.

Max zit in de beste auto, maar ook in die auto zouden Alonso en Hamilton hem hoogstens bij kunnen houden. Die drie zijn op dit moment simpelweg de sterksten en dan steekt Max er ook nog eens bovenuit"

Mijn vader is recent overleden. Het idee 'dat had hij mooi gevonden' heb ik vaak. Ook reglematig dingen waar hij zelf bij betrokken was.

  Ken de ervaring. Die van mij overleed al erg lang geleden. Meer dan 30 jaar geleden. Ik heb het nog steeds. Het verdriet is al lang weg. Was zeker ook omdat hij erg leed, maar het gemis is gebleven.

  Van mij ruim twee jaar geleden (corona), mijn moeder(87) zit nog vol levenslust maar haar verdriet vanwege het gemis is evengoed soms pijnlijk om mee te maken. Het was ook een fantastische vent en vader...
  Bij mij is het verdriet zo goed als weg maar de herinneringen worden steeds mooier. Dat wens ik jou en jouw familie ook toe!
