Marko vreest voor McLaren: "Dan hebben ze een voordeel"

Max Verstappen was vandaag in de kwalificatie oppermachtig. De Nederlander pakte de pole position met een grote voorsprong op zijn concurrenten. De McLarens kwamen nog in de buurt, maar ook dit duo moest veel tijd toegeven. Helmut Marko vreest echter wel dat McLaren sterk zal zijn in de race.

Verstappen was in de kwalificatie 0,581 seconden sneller dan nummer twee Oscar Piastri. De Australische McLaren-coureur was net iets sneller dan zijn teamgenoot Lando Norris. De twee McLaren-coureurs zijn overduidelijk de grootste tegenstanders van Verstappen in Japan. Of ze in de race zijn tempo kunnen bijhouden, is nog maar zeer de vraag. De Red Bull is in ieder geval zeer sterk op het circuit van Suzuka.

Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko was enorm tevreden met het resultaat van Verstappen. De Oostenrijker maakt zich wel zorgen over McLaren. In gesprek met ORF legt Marko dit gevoel uit: "Ik hoop dat we goed wegkomen bij de start en dat we de leiding kunnen vasthouden. Dan kan Max zijn pace managen op een relaxte manier. Als het nog warmer wordt, dan heeft McLaren een voordeel van de twee verse setjes hards. Wij hebben er daar nog maar één van. Als het een tweestopper wordt en we liggen voor, dan denk ik dat we winnen. De tyre wear is heel hoog, dus het wordt sowieso een tweestopper."

  En, er is een reden dat Verstappen in die taxi mag rijden: topcoureurs mogen dat.
  
  Luca Badoer mocht niet in de Ferrari taxi rijden, Schumacher wel.
