James Calado verslaat teammaat Bottas voor pole in Spa

James Calado heeft vanochtend de pole position voor de eerste GP3-race op Spa-Francorchamps gescoord. De ART-coureur was zijn teamgenoot Valtteri Bottas 0.088 seconden te snel af. In een kwalificatie die werd verreden onder wisselende omstandigheden reed Nigel Melker naar de derde startplaats.

De kwalificatie startte onder natte omstandigheden, maar tegen het einde van de sessie droogde het asfalt op. Er konden nog één of twee ronden gereden worden op slicks en daar profiteerden de coureurs van die al eerder hadden besloten om over te stappen naar de droogweerbanden.

Zo deed ook Calado, die de voorlopige pole pakte met een voorsprong van 1,8 seconden op Nigel Melker. De Nederlander was de laatste coureur die nog een ronde kon afmaken, maar hij kwam niet eens in de buurt van de snelste tijd. Ondertussen was Valtteri Bottas er nog onderdoor gegaan en pakte de tweede stek.

Antonio Felix da Costa eindigde als vierde, gevolgd door Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, Nick Yelloly, Conor Daly en Tom Dillmann. Lewis Williamson had twee minuten voor het vallen van de vlag de eerste positie in handen, maar hij besloot door te rijden om zijn intermediates. Daardoor viel hij terug tot de tiende stek.
