Valtteri Bottas leidt dubbelzege ART in eerste race

Valtteri Bottas is hard op weg om de tweede GP3-kampioen in de historie te worden. De Finse coureur was vandaag zijn teamgenoot James Calado te snel af. Nigel Melker reed een solide race en eindigde na een mooi gevecht als derde.

Bottas kwam beter weg bij de start en nam meteen de leiding over van zijn teammaat. Het was daarna wel duidelijk dat de Finse leider in het kampioenschap veel te snel was voor zijn concurrenten. Na acht ronden had hij al een voorsprong van 9,5 seconden op Calado, waarna hij het rustiger aan ging doen.

Calado eindigde 6,5 seconden achter Bottas als tweede, terwijl Nigel Melker de Nederlandse eer vandaag hoog hield met een podiumplaats. Melker moest Adrian Quaife-Hobbs maar liefst drie keer passeren om de derde plaats veilig te stellen. Bij de eerste twee pogingen wist Quaife-Hobbs zich nog terug te vechten.

Conor Daly eindigde keurig als vijfde, nadat hij eerder in de race Alexander Sims van zich af moest houden. Sims kende een goede start en ging in de eerste ronde van de zeventiende naar de zevende stek. Na een aanval die niet succesvol bleek, spinde Sims en gaf twee ronden voor het einde van de race op. Daardoor pakten Tom Dillmann, Nico Muller en ART-rookie Richie Stanaway de laatste punten.
