Coronel sluit seizoen af met een podium in Macau

Het World Touring Car Championship-seizoen 2013 werd, net als in voorgaande jaren, afgesloten op het 6.120 meter lange en uitdagende stratencircuit van Macau. Voor de 41-jarige Tom Coronel verliep de kwalificatie volgens plan en met een beetje geluk. Zo bracht de tiende startplaats voor de eerste race hem de pole position in de omgekeerde startvolgorde van race twee. Dit betekende dat hij tijdens zijn eerste raceoptreden, waarin hij als tiende eindigde, niet te veel risico nam, om de mooie uitgangspositie later op de dag optimaal te kunnen benutten.

De Nederlander, voor het laatst uitkomend in de blauw/witte BMW 320 TC van ROAL Motorsport, kwam goed weg en nam resoluut de leiding. Een enorme crash achter hem leidde vrijwel direct tot een rode vlag-situatie. Na enig oponthoud volgde de tweede start vanachter de safety car en wederom kwam Tom Coronel als beste weg. De druk van achter, onder aanvoering van Thompson in de Lada was echter groot.

Halverwege de race deed zich een tweede zware crash voor. Gele vlaggen, safety car en de rode vlag volgden. Na weer de nodige tijd op de startgrid te hebben gestaan mocht de Nederlander voor de derde maal in leidende positie aan de race beginnen. Ditmaal voor de weinige ronden die nog resteerden. Ondanks een goede start moest Coronel uiteindelijk zijn meerdere erkennen in meervoudig Macau-winnaar Rob Huff en de redelijk agressief rijdende Spanjaard Oriola in de Chevrolet. Tom Coronel sloot zijn seizoen met de ROAL Motorsport BMW 320 TC dus af met een welverdiende en zwaar bevochten derde plaats. In de eindstand van het wereldkampioenschap voor toerwagens eindigde hij met een totaal van 162 punten op de tiende plek.
