Sonoma ingeruild voor ontmoeting in Peking

De internationale autosportbond FIA heeft ingestemd met een wijziging aan de kalender voor het World Touring Car Championship. Sonoma verdwijnt van het schema en daarvoor in de plaats komt een ronde in Peking, op het Goldenport Motor Park.

Logistieke problemen liggen ten grondslag aan de aanpassing. Het schip dat alle auto's en materiaal op 17 september van Oakland naar China zou transporteren is geannuleerd. De eerstvolgende datum voor het vervoer zou 21 september zijn, maar dan zou alles pas op 9 oktober in Sjanghai arriveren. Dat zou de teams te weinig tijd geven om zich goed voor te bereiden op de races op 12 oktober.

Francois Ribeiro van Eurosport Events: "We kregen opeens een logistieke uitdaging voor de kiezen. We hebben alle scenario's behandeld, zoals een andere datum of luchttransport, maar na overleg met de stakeholders van de WTCC was duidelijk dat racen op Sonoma onhaalbaar was. Onze partner in China reageerde snel door een alternatief evenement aan te bieden, waardoor we een week voor Sjanghai in Peking racen."
