López en Monteiro winnen in Japan

De Argentijnse Citroën coureur José María López heeft de eerste race gewonnen tijdens het WTCC in Japan. Honda rijder Tiago Monteiro pakte de overwinning in de tweede race op het thuiscircuit van Honda.

Tijdens de eerste race kon Norbert Michelisz zijn pole position niet vasthouden voor een overwinning. Lopez pakte tijdens de start al de leiding in de wedstrijd en gaf deze niet meer uit handen. De Nederlander Nicky Catsburg spinde al in de eerste ronde en moest daarbij de pits opzoeken en kwam er niet meer uit. De beide rijders van ROAL Motorsport, de Engelsman Tom Chilton en Nederlander Tom Coronel vielen uit door problemen met de remmen. Toeval wil dat ze beide ook in dezelfde bocht uitvielen.

Naast de overwinning van López pakten de Honda’s van Michelisz en Tarquini een podiumplaats. De top zeven bestond verder volledig uit Citroën’s.

Voor de tweede race stonden de Chevrolet van Hugo Valente en de Lada van Catsburg op de eerste startrij. Ook in deze race was het in de eerste bocht al veranderd. De Honda van Tiago Monteiro pakte vanaf de derde plaats de leiding in de wedstrijd en gaf deze niet meer uit handen.

Wereldkampioen en winnaar van de eerste race, José María López, moest in de eerste ronde opgeven door een lekke band en gebroken velg door resten van de auto van Bennani, die een spin maakte in de eerste bocht.

Voor de tweede plaats was er lang een gevecht tussen twee Fransozen, Valente en Muller. Maar door een tik die Muller aan Velente gaf raakte zijn motorkap los, en kreeg de Citroën coureur de melding van de wedstrijdleiding om de pits op te zoeken, waardoor zijn kansen in de race verkeken waren.

Hierdoor wist Velente een twee plek vast te houden en veroverde Rob Huff in zijn Lada Vesta de derde plaats, nadat de Engelsman vanaf de 13e plaats gestart was.

Tom Coronel pakte knap een achtste plaats door een goed ritme vast te houden. De Nederlander was gestart vanaf de 15e plek. De andere Nederlander, Nicky Catsburg wist de finish niet te halen.
