Coronel wil zo lang mogelijk actief blijven

Tom Coronel heeft dit seizoen nog twee ronden in het World Touring Car Championship voor de boeg, maar als het aan de 43-jarige Nederlander ligt worden het niet zijn laatste races in het WTCC. "Ik wil zo lang mogelijk blijven rijden in het WTCC, dat naast de Formule 1 en het WRC één van de drie meest belangrijke wereldkampioenschappen binnen de FIA is", vernam De Telegraaf van Coronel.

Aan de vooravond van zijn optreden op het Chang International Circuit in Thailand vertrouwt hij erop dat hij volgend jaar opnieuw in een Chevrolet Cruze uitkomt voor ROAL Motorsport. De voortekenen zijn gunstig. Het Italiaanse team van Roberto Ravaglia en Aldo Preo heeft nog een zakelijke deal met promotor Eurosport Events, terwijl Ravaglia heeft aangegeven graag door te willen gaan met de Nederlander.

Coronel toonde echter ook interesse in het nieuwe WTCC-project van Volvo. Het Zweedse merk treedt volgend jaar toe met de S60 en zoekt nog naar coureurs. Coronel's hoofdsponsor DHL is in zijn nopjes met de Nederlander en om de WTCC-promotor niet voor het hoofd te stoten, ziet hij af van opties om een week voor de laatste WTCC-race in Qatar nog op zijn geliefde stratencircuit van Macau te racen.

Politiek gezien een begrijpelijk besluit. Nadat het WTCC vaarwel zegde tegen Macau nam immers de nieuwe, concurrerende raceklasse Touring Car Racer (TCR) van ex-WTCC-promotor Marcello Lotti de vakante plek in. "Waarom flirten met iets anders als alles goed voelt voor het WTCC?", reageerde Coronel diplomatiek.

Kon nog wel eens moeilijk worden volgend jaar voor Coronel. Hij maakt dit jaar en matig seizoen mee!

Ik hoop dat die er volgende jaar weer bij is. Nog mooier zou zijn als dat voor Volvo is....

Ach hij heeft nog tijd genoeg om het record van Luigi Fagioli te verbeteren. Die won op 53 jarige leeftijd nog een F1 GP dus...

Wordt zeker erg lastig.. ik weet niet of Chevrolet nog een nieuwe auto ontwikkeld, volgens mij niet namelijk. Met deze auto komt hij al amper meer mee. Echt zonde, want deze coureur is wel erg geliefd binnen de WTCC en hem voorin zien rijden heeft zeker een toegevoegde waarde.
