Lopez wint eerste race en kampioenschap, Nederlanders vallen uit

Jose Maria Lopez heeft de eerste WTTC race op het circuit van Buriram in Thailand als winnaar afgesloten. Lopez pakte met zijn zege ook zijn tweede kampioenschap in het WTCC nadat teamgenoot en concurrent Yvan Muller uitval na een ongeval in de eerste ronde. Lopez leidde de Citroën-trein, Sebastian Loeb werd tweede en Ma Qing Ha mocht de laatste trede op het podium betreden. Voor de Tom Coronel en Nick Catsburg was de eerste race al na de start voorbij.

Bij de start was het meteen chaos toen de Lada-coureurs Catsburg en Nicolas Lapierre betrokken raakten bij een incident waar ook Tom Coronel in de Chevrolet bij betrokken was. Voor alle drie de heren was het meteen einde verhaal. De echte chaos ontstond nadat Tiago Monteiro en Hugo Valente elkaar raakten. Bij de incident waren ook Yvan Muller en Norbert Michelisz betrokken. Muller viel uit en hiermee was de druk voor Lopez vooraan meteen verdwenen. Lopez had door de uitvalbeurt van Muller aan een achtste plaats genoeg om het kampioenschap veilig te stellen.

Door de chaos in de eerste ronde kwam de Safety Car op het circuit om de marshalls de mogelijkheid te geven de gestrande auto's te bergen. Na het vrijgeven van de race viel John Filippi meteen uit. Rob Huff pakte bij de herstart Stefano D'Aste en kon op jacht naar Monteiro, die in de rondte reed met een gehavende Honda Civic. Kort daarna viel de teamgenoot van Tom Coronel, Tom Chilton, uit met een technisch probleem.

Huff had inmiddels vleugels gekregen en wist Monteiro met een spectaculaire inhaalactie te verschalken. Huff kon daarna meteen jacht maken op de vijfde plaats van Gabriele Tarquini. In het vervolg van de race bleven de posities ongewijzigd, Bennani probeerde nog wel tevergeefs de derde plek van Ma over te nemen. Lokaal succes was er ook: Tin Sritrai wist een tiende plaats en daarmee het laatste punt te behalen.

  Helaas is dit idd een goede benaming. Dacht na het vertrek van Chevrolet als fabrikant dat het weer wat spannender zou worden....
