Lopez stapt mogelijk over naar WEC na 2016

Jose Maria Lopez, tweevoudig kampioen in de WTCC, stapt na 2016 mogelijk over naar het World Endurance Championship (WEC). De Argentijn pakte namens Citroën de titel in 2014 en 2015. Lopez komt in 2016 ook uit voor Citroën in het WTCC, maar Citroën liet in november vorig jaar weten na 2016 uit de sport te stappen.

Lopez werd in 2015 op dominante wijze kampioen in het WTCC. De Argentijn won tien races en stond zeven keer op pole position. Lopez kijkt nu al vooruit op zijn toekomst: "Ik zou graag bij Citroën blijven, maar als ik rally's zou gaan rijden is dat niet echt mijn ding. Het is ontzettend jammer wanneer ik het team moet verlaten, maar ik heb altijd gezegd dat ik nog een keer op Le Mans wil rijden. Het zou mooi zijn wanneer ik 2016 al wat ervaring op kan doen met de auto's die rijden op Le Mans, zodat ik me voor 2017 kan richten op het vinden van een stoeltje in het WEC."

Lopez laat echter ook weten dat hij niet al zijn kaarten zet op een toekomst in het WEC. De Argentijn zou ook zomaar actief kunnen blijven in het WTCC na 2016: "Er zijn veel klasses waar ik in zou kunnen rijden. De DTM spreekt me aan, maar ik ken de auto's niet en weet niet of me het zou bevallen. Het zou ook mogelijk zijn dat ik in de WTCC blijf, maar dan bij een ander team. Ik weet nu al dat ik op de rijdersmarkt kom na afloop van het komende seizoen. Ik weet wel zeker dat ik in Europa wil blijven racen."
